Want a cheaper Internet Provider. Your advice please?

Thanks for the input.

I have checked their status page and there is an ongoing Easy7 issue since 20.11. that they don’t seem to have found a solution to (or just a temporary/unverified workaround) and there are several regional issues in the history visible.

If you have frequent outages with a business contract I would suggest to switch provider to be honest or define really tight SLAs .

Stupid question as regards the debate of getting online access via fiber/cable (and through wifi router) vs. 4G/5G internet (via mobile phone and a hot spot).

Do you have any idea, besides the price in CHF, of the “environmental”/energetical costs of getting online via 4/5G?

In my opinion, but I am not expert at all, getting internet via 4/5G requires more energy than a wifi network, but I would be happy to be wrong.

I am simply guessing from the fact that the distance between a wifi router and your device is higher than the distance between your smartphone with a hotspot and the 4/5G antenna.

Completely negligible. 5G has higher transmit power but both dont make any difference in practical terms for individual. Backhaul energy cost from tower can be seen similar to wired connection to house effectively.

Does anyone have actual, hands on experience with Starlink in Switzerland? Not frugal at all but necessary, to couple with 25gbit init7 primary connection I see Starlink as an option for backup for me. Outside placement still to be determined, same with ethernet to terrace but those are solvable for, provided the experience is good (throughput and latency, usable for communications, too).

Ok I admit I was lazy, I just made a quick research, according to this French website there is a factor of 23 between both (so wifi would be 23 times more ecological than 4/5G):

Always worth it to compare with the absolute numbers as well, are we talking about the equivalent of doing 100m by car or 10km?

(And some of the french numbers from ADEME were pretty ridiculous btw, I assume that’s the source for this website)

I did a quick calculation between my phone (with 5G and hotspot enabled consumes 2W, based on a battery app) and a stove to make a pizza (3000W oven).

That means constantly running a separate phone with hotspot draws the same amount of energy as heating up a pizza once every 15.6 days (15 min).

Regarding costs, that phone (no display use, only router function) will cost you ~ 3.5 CHF/year running 24/7 (0.2 CHF/kwh).

Last check: Disabling mobile network and connecting to a wifi: uses about 75% of the energy of the 5G scenario. Hence, yes, you can save energy by using Wifi, and you’ll have ~1 CHF more on your bank account at the end of the year.

I guess that’s pretty neglectable overall.

Have you measured the power draw from a home router? They can be very power hungry.

I haven’t myself but most router will be >5W/h, so about 2.5x the smartphone scenario.
But of course you get proper wireless coverage of your flat/house, which you wouldn’t get with a smartphone hotspot.

Good evening
Due to multiple reasons I want to have free router choice (Fritzbox) and use fiber. Which provider (beside Fiber7 mentioned in this thread) does permit me access fiber via a Fritzbox?
Thanks!

EDIT (adding fiber providers with the possibility to use a Fritzbox):

  • Fiber7
  • iWay

That’s what I wanted too and I took advantage of the Black Friday deal (valid until 2.12.2024) from iWay.

Can you have more than one promo active?

EDIT: I added the code and it added the 5G option with a promo code, in addition to the base subscription which also has its promo code.

Dammit. Just went to the wingo site and part with through it died on me. Now even wingo.ch is giving a 403 Forbidden.

Works flawlessly here?

It says the promo code is not valid when I enter it in my wingo portal. How to do it ?

It’s my browsing style, I think. I hit multiple pages in a few seconds and so I think I got banned.

I checked and it is only 8 Fr. cheaper than my current Abo, so I guess I will stick with it.

That’s how it should work. Either you entered the code wrong or they disabled the deal.
