Coronavirus: when do we reach the bottom of the dip?

Hopefully Turkey doesn’t put Switzerland on their list.

That would be thairyble

Scientists are humans. Humans have biases.

There is no such thing as cost of isolating the vulnerable. It is simply not an option. It doesn’t work.

Finding out how frequent long term illness is, is also not an easy to find out, especially since it is still a very new virus.

Then how do you find out what the counterfactual economic scenario to a lockdown is?

Are those scientists? Isn’t it like a political think tank push aligned with Trump administration? Based on Trump Covid adviser Scott Atlas pushes herd immunity Scott Atlas (a neuroradiologist who was put on coronavirus task force based on his fox news performance as being strongly anti lockdown) was very much involved in that effort.

I’m totally the opposite. I’d be wary of a purported consensus among scientists.

Many people believe it shouldn’t mainly be based on economics and maths - but that is a ethical question.

…and (relatively) few people care.

You just can’t separate people by age or illness. All people work together and meets. Switzerland should look South Korea way but not take right measures at right time after lockdown. The way chooses can reach only what we look now.

It’s not a common virus but a biological weapon modified in a lab. Released voluntarily or not it’s not really important. We have to get rid of this virus for good and not keep for years.

People should learn how disease transmission work because people think always than it’s just cold. All disease are transmitted by something or someone. The problem with winter is cold yes but not due to the cold but heat. People heat a room and never change air (because it’s cold outside) and virus like heat living long time with these pretty good conditions.

Education is the key and even if we are in a country where everyone go to school quality of school decrease and some global knowledge are missing. Confederation do nothing for educate their people and politics go everywhere and back just cause a rebellion against masks and government.

Masks are effective ONLY for sick people and help to not propagate the disease. Asian people learn and know that since years but here in EU it’s just new but people should learn and evolve. If you look other numbers the number of illnesses has dropped drastically not due to cold/heat but just due to lockdown and less people to people transmission. It’s can be always like that if everyone is careful for not spread disease to others.

Education is the key of all. Lockdown if it’s done correctly is pretty good but it an epic failure in our country since may/june due to politics. Go to lower and track these cases for reach 0 case in switzerland and should not let the virus enter again by checking all arriving people. South Korea learn that and mitigate issue since February but our politics decide to not learn from them who already encounter another disease like that and know exactly what to do. If you look South Korea number it’s work very well without global lockdown !

I write to the confederation in march and may for ask them to not remove lockdown so fast and keep student at home until September educate people for disease spread for prtect other testing should be free track people before removing lockdown and follow South Korean example but not received any reply and confederation do nothing just free testing but weeks later and virus already begin to propagate. Summer holidays destroy just all their jobs because people leave don’t care about this virus and now it’s just too late for that and people refuse to follow orders from government we can’t isolate for years old and weak people and too many cases for track anything it’s just too late. A new lockdown is probably the only way for remove this disease if confederation follow strictly South Korea example when stop lockdown but probably fatal for a lot of enterprises jobs and lost all money from confederation spend for help these enterprises back in march.

This virus isn’t like other virus can mutate with other and create another disease. We still not know damage at long term caused due to tissue necrosis and it’s just an irreparable damage. Blood vessels can break with time just due to this virus no one know yet real damage on every people.

Zurich numbers for today are :scream:

+715 new positives, +15 people in hospital

I sometimes like to remind myself of the story of the pond being covered by water lilies to remind myself of what exponential growth looks like.

One week before the end, the pond was 1.5% covered by water lilies. People were thinking: “this is ok, there’s no problem with the lilies there”.

Then, on Tuesday, the pond was 3% covered. “This is no big deal, they said.”

On Wednesday, the pond was 6% covered. Some people started sounding the alarm but the majority thought “there’s still a lot of time to cover this, stop crying wolf and let us live.”

On Thursday, the pond was 12.5% covered. The scientific community was alarmed but most people still weren’t really worried. There was still a lot of uncovered pond, they thought.

On Friday, the pond was 25% covered. People thought they had to do something and started to seriously think about it.

On Saturday, the pond was 50% covered. People redoubled efforts to try and tackle the issue, they were working very hard at trying to slow down the water lilies’ colonisation.

Then on Sunday, there was not a ray of sun going through the surface of the pond anymore. It was 100% covered. From 1.5% to 100% in 7 days, that is what exponential growth looks like (Coronavirus is a bit slower than that but it is still quickly getting too late to take real meaningful measures).

As a population, we are still mostly thinking that we’ve got plenty of time to adress the issue, if there even is an issue, and that people should just let us live our lives and party because what’s a life worth without parties?

I’m afraid we’re already far too late on decisive measures and the governement will have to take drastic action or accept that hospitals do become overcrowded. Too often, we think that we are immune to disasters because we live in Switzerland. We forget that it is because of what we do and how we tackle things that Switzerland is mainly spared big disasters. There’s no natural immunity.

ETA: I also can’t stand the “I’m tired of Covid” stance: you can get tired all you want, we still have to toughen up. The world doesn’t change because we’re tired of fighting, we just become more careless and complacent. If we are tired of living in a stable, successful country where healthcare is mostly affordable enough that people are able not to care if there’s a pandemic going on, then yes, we can get tired of the coronavirus and party like there’s no tomorrow.

Sorry if I sound dire but we are really making this situation harder on ourselves than it really has to be and I’m not tired of Covid. I’m tired of how careless and unresilient we are.

I heard from a doctor in Poland, that the hospital she works for is full and stopped taking new patients. It indeed looks like we’re in for a tougher time than in spring.

I think it’s time that we put any large gatherings on hold, especially if it’s for entertainment reasons.

Nearly every metric is already worse than before the first lockdown light.

Right now we have compared to 16.3:

  • More Deaths
  • Higher Positivity
  • Probably more hospitalisations
  • More cases

This wave is probably going to be worse and longer than the first one.

Maybe we get lucky and the new measures that the federal council decides tomorrow are enough to push Re below 0.8.

I don’t know about you guys but I am preparing myself and gathering some extra cash ready to buy my favorite ETFs soon at discounted prices. Who knows we might see again -30% or even more.

On the other hand hardly any measure taken by governments is tougher during the first wave.
Maybe the mask requirement. Borders are open, restaurants are open, bars are open, gyms are open, even brothels are open.

Maybe, maybe not.

If you look at the U.S. as the bellwether for the global stock market, you could argue they’re now amidst a third wave. Not only seem the markets to have ignored the second wave - markets had risen close to all-time highs when infections peaked.

WHO estimates that 10% of the global population is already infected. Thus making this virus as dangerous as the flu. People start to get that, states get it already. That’s why we are nowhere close to a lockdown in Switzerland despite having 2x more cases than at the peak in March.

The US is weird. They mismanaged is so much that the waves looks the same so people really won’t care more. Here we see the difference and some people care.
What we really need imho is starting the shaming thing. Too many people (me included) see and hate the people that don’t wear a mask or wear under the nose and just curse inside instead of doing something.
Maybe we should go china-style and start to harrass them? (I think no)

What exactly would be a lockdown?

Is it a lockdown, if all events above 15 people are banned, restaurants, clubs and bars are closed but we stores are open?

Where do you see “more deaths” and “hospitalization” as in March 2020? I don’t see that in the Swiss numbers.

There is the archive of old reports on:

For the report of the 16.3 There were 14 reported deaths in Switzerland. The report of 9.3 has 2. So there were 12 deaths reported in the week before the lockdown.

The report of the 16.10 has 1823 deaths reported while the report from the 9.10 has 1794 fatalities in it. So there were 29 new deaths reported in the past week, more than twice as many as before the lockdown.

Part of this can be explained by the slower raise in cases, but I’m not so sure, that all of the difference can be explained by that.

Even with an optimistic CFR of 2%(we only miss around 50% of infections), we will probably end up with 400 deaths alone because of the people who were infected in the last two weeks. With an average of 4000 infections per day over the next two weeks, you can expect another 1000 deaths and if cases drop as fast as they rose because of the measures that were decided on a few hours ago, then you can add another 400 deaths that are caused by the infections after the peak.

Yes, because they do testing now.

Not really comparable, since hardly anyone was tested back then.

I happened to receive a medical certificate from my doctor on March 16, to stay at home, due exhibiting symptoms. Told my doctor I had developed a dry cough without any nasal symptoms. Something I can’t recall ever having had in a seasonal cold - though seems quite common for Covid-19 (nasal symptoms are possible, but often not regarded as main symptoms).

No chance of being tested.
