Wiki threads in the forum

I think a lot of these topics would benefit from a Wiki post.

@Dr.PI Is it possible to insert a Wikipost as post No.1 in such topics?

If the topic has advanced enough, I just made a new wiki post in the past.

Technically I think yes, but, in my opinion, having 500 follow up messages beats the purpose of Wiki. It is better to have a dedicated summary Wiki thread and a discussion thread - see fixed income threads.

We moderators, like all humans, have limited time at our hands. So I would be happy if some senior forum users take initiative and organize few things in the forum, like @oslasho did for fixed income, the latest prominent example, I think.

@Dr.PI : Why was the wiki post closed? Vandalism?

In my opinion, a wiki post with 100 follow-up messages defies the purpose of wiki. That post (thanks @nugget ) is still “under construction”. The situation around 3a has changed significantly, both legally (inpayments for previous years) and practically (solution available). So I closed it in a hope that someone will create a new version.

So, volonteers are welcome to create new Wiki pages on the following topics:

  • professional trading status
  • 3a
  • your option

Anyone feeling like practicing some LLM skills?

Me, other mods and our Leaders can help with slicing, dicing and mixing of messages.

  1. yes, the federal tax administration has published a set of criteria to preliminarily rule out professional securities trading.
  2. yes, those include 6 month holding period, 5x yearly portfolio turnover less than 50% or yearly income, no borrowed capital and derivatives trading only to secure other positions
  3. no, if you occasionally violate one or even several criteria, you are not automatically considered a professional trader.
  4. no, no rando on the internet can tell you exactly how much or often you can violate them, and where exactly the line is drawn, and neither will the tax administration,
  5. so… don’t keep f****** asking about it.

Go to the source: The tax admin is told by the Bundesgericht, what it can or can’t do. There, you will find further clarification:

For the question of professional trading, the criteria of volume of transactions and the considerable amount of margin used are generally more important than the other criteria of systematic, planned trades or use of specialized knowledge (c. 7.1).

Small add: borrower capital with interest payments up to the amount of taxable income from your portfolio is also still fine.
