There are some cheap 10G options. I bought a cheap 10G switch and ancient intel 10G NIC clones.
I think this was on me to do it when it happened (I think upc/sunrise stopped separating the fee at some point when I was still on cable).

UPC had started unbundling billing before the Sunrise acquisition, but since then it seems Sunrise isn’t particularly proactive at contacting property management and canceling per-building contracts to avoid double charging tenants.
So yes, your landlord has to tell Sunrise to fuck off. And you can tell your property management you won’t pay that, getting refunded is their responsibility.

Hmm. I’m paying both the connection and the internet package fee.
However, I’m not using fiber connection so maybe i still need to pay it?
You should check your contract, for me as mentioned by @advicedog upc had re-bundled the abos at some point, iirc they told me to tell my landlord when that happened (but it might be easy to miss the communication).

. As in "Cablecom has new contracts that include it, don’t forget to tell your landlord to cancel it so you avoid getting double-charged.
Landlord likely did nothing wrong if they weren’t informed.
Is it a new rent, or did you pay it ever since?

I see I have “Sunrise Home Q” which was part of the QoQa deal but not sure if it includes the connection. I guess a few people took the same deal - anyone have this and know? Not sure where to find the right details.
I should probably switch to fiber. I just didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with it if something went wrong…
That sheet says it is, “Festnetzanschlussgebühr”. That was the change a while ago, before it was always seperate and for renters part of the utilities.

I read that as the fixed telephone line/number.
And that’s what it says, literally. But in that context, my bet remains that here the term includes cable, as well.

I agree it’s absolutely crazy, the whole reason behind it being so outdated.
But I assume it’s a very convenient situation for UPC/Sunrise and landlords for continuing to make money and scare tenants that they would loose their internet connection if they canceled. I strongly suspect that some landlords canceled their UPC/Sunrise contract but ‘forgot’ to inform the tenant and reduce the rent accordingly.
So, yes, check your rental contact. If you see a TV or Internet fee under Nebenkosten you most likely don’t need it and can request your landlord to reduce your rent accordingly.
I have fibre internet at home with init7 and am happy with it. About two months ago I received a letter from UPC with an internet bill. Reading the fine print, it was an offer to switch my internet to UPC/Sunrise. Conveniently, the letter was worded as referring to my cable internet at home and having the approval of my landlord. I requested written confirmation that I will not be billed and put up a warning to the other tenants.
That wouldn’t be convenience but fraud, right? (I don’t think landlords have any stake/gains here, they’re just passthrough like for other utilities)
UPC / Sunrise broadband plans have included the base fee for about 10 years as stated by @Brndete
Not sure about the smaller cable operators that didn’t get gobbled up by UPC, but I assume it’s the same.
There are 3 scenarios:
- With DSL or FTTH and IPTV: get your cable outlet disconnected using the Sunrise contact form. I don’t know if they still send a technician to physically seal the outlet in your house, as in modern buildings it can simply be disconnected in the basement, that might also be possible with modern HFC infrastructure.
- I you want internet over DSL or FTTH yet keep TV over DVB-C for some reason: Sunrise should bill the base fee (about 41.- these days) individually.
- Sunrise (or Yallo) internet + TV + fixed line: the base fee is included.
In any case it’s not your landlord’s problem anymore and should not show up in ancillary costs.
But yes, just move to FTTH if possible, not much can go wrong, it either works or doesn’t, pretty binary thing. The only annoyance might be the OTO outlet location.
Sometimes I truly wonder what the Konsumentenschutz and the FRC do in this country… even if the landlords and property management companies were not made aware, what kind of bullshit justifies double-billing unless the tenant looks into it? Once UPC switched to billing the base fee individually (whether waived or not), all previous communal, per-building contracts should have been canceled automatically.

Yes. My current internet box with Sunrise connects to the cable outlet, so I guess I still need it. I guess I need to coordinate the new FTTH provider with cancelling the Sunrise contract.
I have no idea. But what would be the risk for the landlord in keeping the money while not paying UPC anymore? If a tenant complains the landlord can simply reverse the charge. Would you really sue your landlord for fraud?

And check carefully. It might be listed as an explicit item on the utility bill or hidden in utilities or even normal rent. You have the right to cancel it and have bill or rent reduced accordingly.
Landlord would only benefit if they got rid of it, but still pass it on. More likely ignorance then fraud, but it could happen.
Providers don’t have the contract for it with the tenant, it’s part of the rental contract. If you just don’t need it anymore, it’s lost. If it’s double-charged, because it’s included already in a package, you should be able to reclaim it, I think 5 years back. In that scenario from landlord, and landlord itself from provider.

Maybe 8 years ago, they didn’t bother. But I could still use the standard cable TV. Service told me they couldn’t disconnect it remotely, either, but it would be immoral for me to continue to watch cable TV after cancelling it
