Self-custody of cryptocurrencies

By repeating it many times per day, there is no other way. And checking from time to time that my backups are in place.

otherwise you can also rent a safe in a Bank, (it’s not expensive at all for a small one) and add a power of attorney in case something happens to you

Today, I was refunded with ca. 35% of my Celsius holdings. Directly to the Coinbase account. I got BTC and ETH back. Nice surprise.

Good news (relatively, given the bankruptees and the lawyers kept the rest ).
Were you in the “convenience class” or higher up?

no idea… just accepted every communication by default. Probably the average joe class

Short of HW wallets,
Any thoughts about Exodus vs. Coinbase wallet (for self-custody, not the general Coinbase exchange)?

You can start by comparing the lists of supported assets and thinking about what you need. That was one of the reasons I am using Exodus. Additionally I use TrustWallet for some other coins not supported by Exodus.

I don’t have to care anymore about altcoin wallets. Bitcoin only. Jade and Ledger hw wallet. Aqua, WOS, Alby for 2nd layer. The tiny altcoin remainder are on metamask, ledger and polkadotjs (waiting in April for the last parachain end).

Does anyone any have opinions on what the “best” cold wallet is?

Haven’t found any recent/up-to-date discussions here on the forum, apart from this closed thread (which doesn’t contain any mention of Tangem).
AFAIK Ledger and Tangem or Trezor are all good candidates to the throne. I am leaning towards Tangem as it doesn’t rely on any battery and I like the backup cards.

Of course, there would also be the option of a paper wallet. For the use case of just storing BTC, this is also perfectly fine, no?

I have with Ledger some Bitcoin, but the big chunk is with several Blockstream Jade.

I use both with Sparrowwallet.

I’m Bitcoin only. I don’t trust Ledger (especially Ledger Live) anymore. Super happy with Jade.

Because of recent security issues? Still seems to be the most sold wallet on Digitec at least.

You handle this without physical connection (air-gapped) via it’s QR code functionality? It looks nice, but what happens if battery fails? I guess only option is using the seed then to restore the wallet (unless you can actually find a replacement battery).

This scenario is why I thought about battery-free alternatives. On the downside, Tangem is less open-source than Blockstream Jade. Not that I could really verify that code myself, but having the option is what counts

Why does nobody mention Bitbox02?

Do you use it? Also sounds reasonable to me. Very dummy-proof tutorial from Finanzfluss on YT.

Possible, but never used it air-gapped. I do all the transactions on a stripped down linux computer behind firewall. The usual payments in shops or online I do anyway “less secure” with Wallet of Satoshi or Aqua (LN).

The hardware wallet is just a signing device (speak for using in transactions). It does not spare you to remember/not forget/get destroyed your seed. Loosing ability to sign a transaction I do only every 3 or 4 weeks is ok.
I tested all the seed phrases of all devices and have it on paper in my fireproof emergency bag with all the other important documents and stuff. Additionally on a veracrypt encrypted vault in a keepass file on 2 drives meant for backup of all my files. My wife and kids know where to find them and how to use it, if I get rekt .

Yes, easy setup and backup process (first time hard wallet user). So far very happy.

I use it too with steel plate backup for the seed phrase.

Can recommend it

I use Tangem cards, and I am very satisfied with their ease of use and high level of security. I used to rely on Ledger, but I switched to Tangem after the recent security issues.

I believe Ledger is still the best-selling wallet on Digitec because it received the most advertising exposure and support from many crypto influencers on YouTube.
