Thanks, got the link. I had not seen all the answers before, but it seems that a fruitful discussion was started. I used harsh words but then this is a situation where it is hard not to use such.

LOL, so it’s not just my impression that in German(-speaking) forums, people are much rougher/unfriendlier with each compared to English-speaking ones. No matter the topic, be it cars, computers or whatever. Sometimes they call each other assholes even when agreeing :man_shrugging:t2:

I wonder if you have ever been to a Dutch forum (.. or am I derailing the topic now).

I used to be much more active in this forum. But post-covid there was a spike in political polarization. I believe adult people should be able to handle a few mean words, so I was pretty liberal as a mod. But people were offended and threaten to leave, so it has been decided by MP that the forum should center around FIRE and stray away from politics.

That was already quite a bummer for me, as for me most anxiety comes from the direction we’re heading. Then I overreacted to some Tesla-bashing post by unlisting that thread. As punishment I was stripped off mod rights. I asked for my account to be deleted multiple times, but MP talked me out of it each time.

Things like unrealized gains tax, exit tax, 5 days paid leave due to period, 13th pensions, really do make my blood boil. A gradual escalation of freebies for some and tax burden for others. Once I thought that at least a forum centered around FIRE would be sensitive to why that’s dangerous, but I was proven wrong. The ones who want to ring the alarm are silenced, ridiculed, bashed for bad language etc.

I guess it has to get MUCH worse before it gets better.

Unfortunately that is the case in Germany, not in Switzerland normally. And even worse, I got threatened with prosecution when I did delete some stupid comment of a nazi, even after warning him a few times. Lucky for me it was an empty threat, but it is hard, I know. I moderate there since 25 years and it is getting harder every year.

This is different. I did not get any kind of warning and I don’t think I broke any rules. But we cannot go back in time…

Anyhow, this tax is a central hurting point for everybody who wants to FIRE and therefor should be allowed to be discussed here.

However, there is an important difference to the other forum I moderate: it is not commercial, while this one seems to be. In other words: someone else profits from my work. That I don’t like…

I think the language used is incendiary by Swiss standards.

A better formulation would be something along those lines:

“The Dutch have extreme tax rules that restrict financial freedom in an unacceptable way. It appears that the Dutch are treated like slaves by their own government.”

Then write what these rules are, how they came to be, and then discuss.

Do we really want everybody sound like bland ChatGPT-like robots?

What’s wrong with a bit of passion and personality?

I think using the word slaves in these contexts is not doing justice to what slavery was and is (yes, slavery is still happening today).

The sibling to this is “I’m just telling how it is”.

Arguments in a discussion forum should be conducive to rational discussion. For the rest, I’d say, there are other places.

Maybe when thinking about deleting a thread where the topic is ok, the first step could be to ask the author(s) to edit the parts of their posts that are not in line with forum rules.

I was writing for half an hour about the European Zeitgeist on what’s allowed today and what’s not, but deleted everything and come to a conclusion: It’s take it or leave it. (I love the discussions about the Dutch’s tax topic on nostr and for sure on X).
In this forum on the other hand I find the personal financial stripteases amusing.
To @cubanpete_the_swiss: I don’t want to miss the wheels of fortune updates… please tell where it can be followed.

Very well, I will repeat it again:

and from the oxford dictionary:

work excessively hard.

“after slaving away for fourteen years all he gets is two thousand”

But the best definition comes from Gatillazo in Spain as presented here:

Freedom is the most important in live. But people are afraid of it.

Easy rider about freedom:

Iconic scene, still remember it word for word (including the “eek eek eek” sound Nicholson makes - not sure if it’s in the vid, I didn’t see it) and it’s been 25 years since I watched it, iconic film.

Now that is the worst argument I heard so far. Either it is against the rules or it is not. If it is against the rules, tell the author and if he ignores that you delete. If it is not against the rules where is the problem.

If it is not against the rules but you dislike it for some reason, just contact the author. That would have been the correct course of action, although I understand that it may be more work than just to delete.

I suppose it is not allowed to post a link to another forum. I may try but I suppose it will be deleted.

It is.

Now I feel offended, because it is the word “be” not “write”. That is not very civil!

Yeah, I’ve heard other writers complain that thoughtful, nuanced writing is now indistinguishable from AI.

I’ll take it as a compliment. :folded_hands:

So what, are we now going to ban metaphors and hyperboles, in order not to offend anyone? What about a bit of poetic flair? Does every post have to be written as if it came from an EU commission?

  • I would die to eat some ice cream
  • Please, be mindful of all the people who died and their loved ones!

This is the feminization of modern World. Getting to the truth is not the top priority. Getting along and not offending anyone is. Everybody has to feel safe, we need to create a nice and cozy safe space, where we will be nice and warm.

OMG, do I have to delete a thread about deleted threads???
