Agree that rules and regulations around Covid often don’t make sense or are inconsistent, but I still don’t really see the “grain of truth” you mention.
What are the rulers to gain from closing down grocery stores?
In 2019 not allowing citizens to be masked (during protests or some other places) was evidence of government overreach. In 2020 almost the exact opposite has become evidence of government overreach.
Western governments have been quite consistently on the side of freedom to the detriment of pandemic control.
All I mean to say is that people have the right to be skeptical, within reason. Just because their reasoning is wrong, doesn’t mean their intuition is wrong.
Totally agree. Unfortunately today it’s sometime really hard to identify if your intuition is your own, or just a reflection of the influence of what you read/hear on all the information influx we are spam with (social media, twitter “infos”, youtube “specialist”…)
Just this morning, after the start of the discussion a colleague walked into our office and start a discussion about “a really interesting interview he has seen on youtube this weekend, that clarify a lot of things he already know, about government and stuff… Like for example that Jeff Bezos is obviously funded by the secret service because it is just impossible to become that rich if you are not funded by them. Impossible!” and rant about how sure the source is… I mean, come on…
Complot theory as became as sensitive subject as religion and politic and I’m sure it will became really soon banned from work environment as the other two. And the way it have started to infiltrate our society, more and more people might use it in harmful way, and it will for sure influence how the maket can behave in the futur. It has already influenced strongly at least two US election and a Brexit so…
“within reason” implies having some valid and verifiable reasons. It is good and healthy to be skeptical, demand transparency and accountability and I agree with you there. But intuition without reason (or without correct reason / evidence) is nothing more than a big soup of gossip, rumour, bias, and often complete nonsense!
Regarding the title of this thread, the question that interests me the most at the moment:
When can we expect the next stock market drop?
When I look at the measures been taken globally, I don’t see a reasoning for the market being so optimistic at the moment. Somehow I think that there will/should be a quite big awakening, as soon as people and governments realise the damage the global economy took.
I don’t want to time the market, but nonetheless ask myself if it’s any good to invest more money into stocks at the moment, when we are on an all time high during a time where nobody really knows how all these ramifications will impact the global economy over the next years. What’s your thought on that?
Any time soon, in the range of the next 0 to 10 years.
To repeat what has been already stated many times: Economy != Stock market.
Thought exercise:
If we “wait” for 3 years, and the market grows 15% p.a. in the meantime, will the “drop” of 30% matter (compared to as if you have invested today)?
On the other hand, this rise of the new strain (and potentially others) brings some more uncertainty and worry.
What’s your asset allocation? If 100% stocks, maybe diversifying would allow you to revel in the thought
that other parts of your portfolio are poised to do great?
Also, that:
Nobody knows if a drop will happen and nobody knows, if it happens, whether or not it will reach lower prices than we have today (hence diversification also through asset classes, because eggs and baskets and having many of them).
Since we touched on the subject of conspiracy theories, what’s your take on the Great Reset? Do you think it’s just some meaningless blah-blah of the elite, or should we take it seriously?
Instead of traditional capitalism, the high-profile group said the world should adopt more socialistic policies, such as wealth taxes, additional regulations and massive Green New Deal-like government programs.
“Every country, from the United States to China, must participate, and every industry, from oil and gas to tech, must be transformed,” wrote Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum. “In short, we need a ‘Great Reset’ of capitalism.”
Schwab also said that “all aspects of our societies and economies” must be “revamped,” “from education to social contracts and working conditions.”
I don’t know, but when the elites want to serve a covid-induced revolution, I’m skeptical.
Just not gonna happen. At least not at this scale. Would be nice, but $$>everything. Human life and society concern are thrown away so far now, that it would only take something really extreme to change things radically.
I personally think that our salvation is only by an full scale alien invasion. If we become “us” versus “them”, it’s the only way that human life will be once again looked at with value. At the expense of the alien’s life of course, but hey, they aliens, f**k them
Would be nice? What in particular? I’m really disillusioned. I don’t believe that the wealthiest and most powerful people are so concerned about the World, that they want to make it a better place, and that they know the right way to make it better. Any kind of central planning eventually fails. Evolution, not revolution…
Since nobody seems to care, here’s a good summary. I just hope people won’t allow them to “fix” the economy. It’s enough that the whole lockdown hit small business the most, while big tech corporations are thriving. Then they fly with private jets to Davos and say we need to fix the economy, give me a break…
Not sure what this “great reset” is, but if it involves removing CO2 from the atmosphere I tend to like it. I start to believe that capitalism might not be able to fix the mess it created.
A couple of weeks ago we read the news on how the cantons were starting their vaccinations. We can find everywhere the information on how many doses Switzerland has ordered from the different companies.
I find it absolutely ridiculous that the information on how many vaccines have been given in CH is nowhere to be found (if I’m mistaken, please help, I can’t find it anywhere).
Thank you for the link. It’s the usual information that is also on the BAG website but I did learn how many doses have been shipped to Switzerland at the moment apparently, which I did not know.
However still no information on how many doses have been administered. Or how many doses each canton has. No data at all.
