Thanks, just tried it. Sadly, they donât have the total return data (clicking âadjâ in the bottom right doesnât do anything for the Nikkei225).
msci.com ?
Only goes back to 1998 or so.
best I could find 89 to 23
Curvo has msci japan index data going back to 78, but currently not sure if that is total return. You could cross check with above source.
E: Ok even better: I got the source from Nikkei directly (only until 21 though, but from there on is easy to estimate yourself): Nikkei 225 Total Return hitting a record high | Nikkei Inc.
Wasnât able to export into a table, but hereâs some screenshots from Bloomberg:
Daily chart till yesterday:
MSCI Japan has data since 1994. thatâs all.
So I donât think such an index even existed before
Thatâs maybe when MSCI thought it was a good idea to also make money on that.
From Wikipedia on the Nikkei 225:
History
The Nikkei 225 began to be calculated on September 7, 1950, retroactively calculated back to May 16, 1949 when the average price of its component stocks was „176.21 (equivalent to „1,427 in 2019) using a divisor of 225.[5][6] Since July 2017, the index is updated every 5 seconds during trading sessions.[5]
I donât know details about the MSCI JP, but besides the Nikkei, check TOPIX.
I meant MSCI Japan index. Sure Nikkei existed before.
There is some information on Index Information - Nikkei 225 Total Return Index
Inception date
December/28/1979Calculation base date
December/28/1979 ïŒ 6569.47
But I couldnât find any monthly or daily data since 1979 at first glance, which I guess is what youâre looking for.
Thank you, but total return sadly is only for 2004 forwardâŠ
Thanks, that would be what I was looking for, but the form doesnât seem to work (canât select a year, button below is stuck on âwait for loadâ).
Thank you, that was exactly what I was looking for, namely when did the Nikkei recover with dividends reinvested, and the answer is ~30œ years.
Just buy and hold for the LOOOONG term. Donât worry, if youâre 50, it will recover 15 years after your retirement ![]()
Iâd be interested in a chart that shows nikkei, yen interest rates and FX rate vs dollar or gold and how the interplay between the 3 evolved.
Donât worry, by then the retirement age is 70, so it will have recovered after 10 years already.
Arenât you maybe focusing a bit selectively on the previous all-time high in 1990?
Keep in mind, these were the returns of Nikkei 225 before 1990 (right column, in %):
He probably is. People maybe drive a Toyota, have a Sony TV or watch anime, and the market isnât as open the US one, but it remains a major country and market, with much more to offer (not saying any of the above isnât ok, just saying the perception of ht market may be skewed).
Letâs sit back and watch.
What is the point you think Iâm making for which youâre suggesting Iâm focussing too much on the 1990 peak on?
I might have jumped to conclusions, but what did did you actually want to ask for?
And why you turn to chat bots?
As I said above, I was wondering how long the recovery for the Japanese market took, but with dividends included, as excluding them paints an inaccurate picture.
After not finding what I was looking for through âclassicâ search engine means, I used the âresearchâ functionality of said chatbots in hopes they might uncover sources I havenât found. Why?
Got it. It was long and painful. From now on, itâs hopefully awesome.
