Any gamers here?

Yeah indeed, this is extremely annoying…

On topic, I started playing Witcher 3 for the fourth time, the first three I hated the fact it shoved Gwent up our…ok, more sanitized, down our throats - nothing more annoying than talking to an extremely important character about the end of the world and then dropping “fancy a few rounds of Gwent?” in the mix.

This time I decided to give it a go and…got hooked, to the point where playing Gwent with NPCs became equally, if not more, interesting for me than the quests. So I decided to give the standalone Gwent a try. FFS, I missed the train as usual, but the game ROCKS! And it’s totally free to play, it’s not pay to win…which seems it was its demise, they made a too good and complete game and then decided not to charge anything for it. I read that CDPR removed support a few years back, but kept servers up and community balancing in place. Really, got ultra hooked on Gwent!

I don’t know if gamers also includes card games/tcg (like Pokémon, Magic, etc) but I recently got back into Pokémon, found my old collection and have been having a blast with it.

Granted, it’s not as cheap as PC gaming but if you are willing to buy, sell and trade some cards, especially if you are coming to it with an older collection, you can have a lot of fun and meet new people.

If any of you are in the Basel area and interested in board games, let me know!

I really liked Legends of Runeterra and they had the same problem. The game was awesome and absolutely not pay to win - they wanted to do the League of Legends business model… Sadly, they completely went overboard, you could build a new deck a month if you were semi active.

They also didn’t sell packs, only “wild cards” where you could buy the cards you wanted directly. Ethical business just doesn’t make enough money . A good example that gamers are just talkers… It was a good game, but it didn’t get honored at all for it (unlike hearthstone, which was completely p2w).

that’s possibly how Gwent is, even if you lose a lot (I do) you still get semi-decent progress and get more packs reasonably regularly. Or you get scraps (an ingame currency) by playing, allowing you to get specific cards without spending money. I have mixed feelings about the fact that you can’t buy any specific card, I had a few chats with card gamers who all said that Valve’s Artifact really messed up the psychology by allowing players to buy specific cards. Instead of people spending a lot up front and then continuing to pay to stay competitive it was almost like overfertilizing a plant, it died.

The psychology is interesting though, when I was a kid I remember people collecting football and other types of cards, ripping open booster packs only to be disappointed by getting the 5th-10th-20th “player X” which everybody had masses off. In theory paying for specific cards is fairer on the spenders, yet the spenders seem to like the dopamine of opening a new booster, whether it’s digital or physical, despite knowing full well the company is ripping them off and the rare cards are one in XYZ.

That said, and despite not knowing much at all about card games, it seems to me CDPR made a damn fine card game with Gwent.

A card game needs gambling, it just can’t grow enough without it - no matter if I myself do gamble or not. The reason CS GO etc. was as big as it was - was the garbling aspect.

Valve basically killed the game by removing 3rd party vendors with low fees - tough luck ig.

I have a old (10y?) tower with some GPU in it, and it has some save games of Stalker (1) Gamma.

This is about the only game of my collection i can’t run on my current Thinkpad with Ryzen Pro 7

next recent retro activity: Earth 2140! A gem of old, but only through nostalgia

Buy a ps4 which have a firmware compatible with jailbreak. I know, this is bad, but very mustachian.

Ultima online.. good memories

I love games, but sometimes am fearful of playing them as it feels like such a time sink / waste of time. Anyone else get that?

Before I had a life, no. Now with family, yes absolutely.

Maybe it is since I had kids…

I remember in my childhood wasting a year or two on computer games where I’d spend nearly all my free time playing them…

And why would you consider it wasted time? Did you enjoy life in that moment? I think so, so it wasn’t wasted

I probably spent 20’000-30’000 hours on gaming in my life, that’s roughly 3 full years. I don’t regret a single second of it.

I loved it! I try to understand this feeling as if I spend, say, all evening playing games or watching TV, then afterwards I feel guilty and it wasn’t a very productive use of my time. I think part of it is that I’m indoors and not getting enough exercise too.

I wonder if I mix it with outdoor exercise whether I’d feel better about it?

An ex- tried to help me overcome this and reminded me that hobbies are not supposed to be productive.

EDIT: I just did a search online and it seems that others suffer from this and it has some names: productivity guilt and toxic productivity.

I moreso have the problem that if I want to play HOI4 or something, I always feel like I don’t have time and it’s not really worth starting, because I can’t get anywhere anyway.

But while I also sometimes get that feeling, it’s just a hobby and I enjoy spending time with said hobby!

Definitely. I go to the gym and play tennis 5-6 times a week, I also ride my motorcycle when it’s nice outside. So I have absolutely no regret playing a game for 5-6 hours straight on one of my restdays.

HOI4 is still ok, it is one of the fastest Paradox games :stuck_out_tongue:

I just bought Battlestar Galactica : Scattered hopes it’s a roguelite.

It’s very good, as a fan of the 2004 tv show the memories are flowing thru me when i play it !

I still have an Atari 2600 if you’re interested:)

I’ve always wanted those. They were around when I was kid and my parents refused to let me have any kind of computer…
