I just bought Battlestar Galactica : Scattered hopes it’s a roguelite.
It’s very good, as a fan of the 2004 tv show the memories are flowing thru me when i play it !

I’ve always wanted those. They were around when I was kid and my parents refused to let me have any kind of computer…
Used to have an Intellivision (was living in North America at the time) - "The Intellivision is a home video game console released by Mattel in 1979, known for its advanced graphics, strategic games, and competition with the Atari 2600" - i enjoyed it MORE than the Atari actually.
We also had a Commodore PET at home (integrated screen, keyboard and storage) and loving playing games on it and even did some basic BASIC programming. Should have stuck with tech career-wise later as it would more lucrative and more inspirational than ‘boring’ industry.

I got the exact opposite advice by a very smart person: make your hobby into a job. Sadly I didn’t!
This is a great approach as well. Being passionate about something can lead to fantastic results. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always quite work out that way:)

Right now my go-to platform is itch.io for web (incremental) games.
I don’t play any games, but somehow this Steam programme has a bug, showing 11232 hours of Civilisation V.

I can not really vouch for that - my hobby was ruined due to corporate nonsense and now, I completely lost intrest in programming for good.

I wanted to share my PC upgrade journey. I built this system in May 2021 with the following specs:
- AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
- ASUS TUF RTX 3090
- ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming
- Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 4x8 GB DDR4-3600 CL18
- Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini
- Corsair SF750
- NZXT Kraken Z63
- 7x Corsair QL120 + Commander Pro
- WD SN850 1 TB
In November 2022 MediaMarkt accidentally listed the WD SN850X 4 TB at CHF 320 due to a pricing error. At the time it was selling for around CHF 600, so that turned out to be an incredible deal.
In July 2024 I sold my 4x8 GB RAM kit for CHF 150 and upgraded to 4x32 GB for CHF 300. It was complete overkill back then, but it turned out to be a good decision: just this week I sold two of the four 32 GB sticks for CHF 300, so I’m now back to 64 GB at virtually no cost.
About 2-3 weeks ago I also sold my 5950X and RTX 3090, which made the upgrade to a 5800X3D and RTX 5080 essentially cost-neutral. In total, I’ve spent only CHF 470 on upgrades over the past five years. The AM4 platform is now over five years old, but the system still feels surprisingly modern:

Looking back I’m really happy with how the system evolved. Instead of replacing the whole platform, I upgraded individual components when it made sense while selling the old ones at a good time. For me, that has been a surprisingly cost-effective way to keep a high-end gaming PC up to date.

I just finished Halo Campaign Evolved on Legendary with a friend. I‘ll probably replay it solo on Legendary. I‘m also on a fresh savegame in Cyberpunk 2077. Plus I never got to finish Metro Exodus (only played it till the Wolga level). So I‘m mostly into shooters.

I tried Metro Exodus and it didn’t click for me, possibly because shooters are too stressful for me nowadays! Bought the Resident Evil 1+2 remasters on a Steam sale but couldn’t play them because of that, even though I finished both as a teenager. Cyberpunk 2077 I finished (+DLC), probably will replay it once I get myself a PS6, its world building is sublime.
Speaking of which, I never had a good gaming PC set up, but since buying a PS4 I find I’d struggle spending money on a PC, when I can get 70-80% of the performance with the latest console + 120Hz OLED gaming TV, costing 1/4-1/3 of the money of a top end PC rig, all the while parking my ass on my sofa while gaming. Of course if you want the absolute best performance a PC + gaming monitor cannot be beat, but I can settle for 70-80%!
I don‘t know what you mean by 70-80%? With a gaming PC you get massively better visuals and a much higher framerate? It‘s a completely different gaming experience.
My PC is ~4x more powerfull than a PS5 Pro and DLSS is black magic.
Can I get your expert opinion? For occasional gamers due to workload and time available: Can Nvidia GeforceNow be a more cost effective solution than maintaining a hardware?
I tested a few games for a short while, if you have a good connection it seems still be playable but not sure if it would hold up for longer hours, peak period or high res gaming.
It depends what your needs are, gaming PCs come at different power levels, a 1k CHF PC can be called a “gaming PC”, as can a 4-6k one - and that’s without the monitor, sound system and chair. I also remember reading there are diminishing returns going from 120Hz to 144Hz and beyond, the human eye can essentially not tell the difference. Also depends on what games you play, I no longer play fast games, or do any PvP so I am pretty sure a PS5 Pro/PS6 will cover everything I’d possibly need.
Edit: I asked ChatGPT, appears I was wrong (it’s known to happen), it says a PS5 Pro is roughly equivalent to a 2k gaming PC, but not higher. This reinforces my opinion that for me getting the next PS is the most cost-effective solution, and let’s not forget the benefit of playing while lying on the sofa!
