Please define “independent”
Not backed up by a traditional bank, I meant.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but are you guys aware of the included apps you get with Premium/Metal? I personally use Perplexity, NordVPN, Heaspace and Freeletics, which saves me a ton of money compared to the premium fees. Go check it out
There is also an FT subscription included with the metal and ultra plans.
That one I didn’t know and is actually a great deal. Perplexity Pro costs 20$/month. So it actually doesnt make any sense for anyone to buy it directly from Perplexity, when you get it with the 11 CHF Revolut Premium Plan.
Only thing I don’t like, is that Revolut Premium is a yearly subscription, so it lacks flexibility…
I save even more by using none of those services and not subscribing for Premium!
I’d actually be interested in the FT, Perplexity and Chess.com. Although in reality, I’d only use the FT subscription. Though I’m too cheap to pay 19 Fr. for that benefit (even though it is cheaper than buying direct for 55 per month).
Check if your company has a subscription https://find-your-subscription.ft.com/
I found out that my organisation has access to lots of publications (FT, WSJ…) but doesn’t promote it at all.
We used to have it and then it got killed in a cost cutting exercise.
To be honest, the headlines are usually enough to get a feel for what is going on and I can view the articles anyway through various tricks (my browser has adblockers and paywall/nag removers).
Thanks, I didn’t know that.
Is there a full list of available partnerships? I see that @PhilMongoose also mentioned chess.com.
Financial Times Premium Digital, WeWork, Deliveroo Plus Silver, ClassPass, MasterClass, Chess.com Diamond, NordVPN Complete, The Athletic, Headspace, Sleep Cycle Premium, Freeletics Coach, Tinder Gold, Picsart Gold, Turo, Headway Premium.
https://www.revolut.com/ultra-plan/ (UK website, for some reasons the page is no longer available on the Swiss one; you need to download the app).
If you go in the app, there’s a full list there.
Since a few days I’m browsing the subreddit https://www.reddit.com/r/Revolut/, I’m quite shocked by the number of account suspended and the quality of their support.
It seems that an account can be suspended at any point and it’s hard to reach the support and get the issue resolved.
Some threads:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Revolut/comments/1h3xjfp/account_removed/
https://www.reddit.com/r/Revolut/comments/1h5rrvd/kicked_out_of_my_rent_because_revolut_restricted/
Obviously, the Reddit threads will be mostly issues and a lot of customers are happy with the Revolut service. However, i would strongly advise to diversify with other account and card.
I read a report that Revolut have more scams tha any other major bank in UK
So I think Revolut is good for use as wallet for travel etc but not really for serious bank account.
The main reason, why I switched to a Swiss solution.
Some people even let transfer their salaries to the (blocked) Revolut account and were not able to pay the rent or buying groceries anymore - obviously, this is ultra naive.
I just use it reasonably - not more than a few hundreds up there that I plan to spend internationally (if more than that, then just for very short periods);
and have Wise/Neon cards as backup options if that one gets locked by any chance.
I wonder how much of it is just a matter of scale. They do have 45 million users.
It seems that a minority of people experience issues compared to the majority of the bank’s customers. In my opinion, this is rather negligible. However, as usual, these incidents create noise, and humans tend to focus more on that noise. Personally, I don’t use Revolut but prefer Neon and Wise as backups.
I also have a Revolut story:
I was charged CHF 199.52 in 2022. The charge was made via an for me unknown game with in-game currency (Pubg Mobile). The charge was made via the virtual one-way card, which was strange because I wasn’t using it. I then reported a fraud and demanded a refund, which was refused because the transaction was supposedly 3D-verified. However, I never received a push notification about this and I don’t have an email that is sent for new logins.
Was I a victim of fraud and was it my own fault?
The next day I found a new thread in the Revolut community forum with hundreds of affected people. The thread was several pages long. The forum, community.revolut.com
, doesnt exist anymore. All different amounts, same game, all had one thing in common: The debit was made via the virtual one-way card in the last 3 days. Various forums and blogs reported the same thing:
- Inside Paradeplatz
- Twitter Posts
- Revolut Community Forum
Maybe someone found a way to generate new card numbers via disposable card without authentication? Maybe someone reverse engineered the app and found a security hole? I don’t know. In any case, it is strange that all affected do not receive a 3D push message or an e-mail about a new login. A week later, the thread on Revolut was closed with the message that the problem had been fixed and the money would be refunded. The forum thread is no longer available. Since then I have deactivated the virtual card and have no more than 1k on Revolut. Mistakes can happen. The problem is that it is impossible to reach anyone at Revolut.
Yes, there was a lot of noise about this. I think they had a bug with their vitual card implementation which allowed someone to exploit it at scale. I guess they fixed the problem now.
Revolut is changing their fees apparently. CHF-> EUR seems to be free (in SEPA) but EUR->CHF not. Am I wrong?
