What was the consensus of the board?
If your tax payment is not more than 10 % of your portfolio value, you can do margin. You are likely to do better financially as long as the interest on the margin loan is lower than the expected growth of your portfolio.
There are many threads here on timing tax payments, where the discussion is more nuanced.
