Where to move within Switzerland to save costs: examples

Does anyone know within Switzerland the cheapest places to live or communes which offer additional benefits for being resident.

I give an example below of Finhaut in Valais.

Apartment going for 275k (but the commune will offer 10% financial assistance on property below 400k (link https://www.lagenceimmo.ch/en/o/for-sale-apartment-finhaut-4986828?page=1 )).

Further communal benefits include season pass to verticalp emosson, and discounted rail tickets.

And the cheapest childcare I can find 25chf per day 4 days per week (roughly 5000 per year for workers on any salary).

Cons: remote, limited amenities, small village

Any other places I should know about?

And relative to income or not?
You need to look at it all, not just housing - taxes, insurances, etc.

To be honest I was just looking for odd examples of places that have good municipal benefits beyond their general taxation. 5k per year in for childcare seems crazy low.

Finhaut is a great example of how smaller, remote communes can offer major cost advantages. Other places you might want to look at include parts of Jura, Uri, and some of the smaller Valais communes. They often have lower property prices, lower taxes, and communal perks like reduced local services or public transport discounts.

Don’t forget: Home is often where your friends and family are. To add something else to the discussion:

  • I lived near the German border. Shopping in DE has contributed well to my savings rate
  • If you commute by train: Chronotrains might be of interest

But I’d move somewhere else after the childcare career of my kids is over.
