What are your most profitable segments?

What were your top investments? I had a look and was a bit surprised. The below is not truly a picture of the best investments as it considers only unrealized gains.

There maybe have been gains that I already took, or gains look lower since I at some point ‘timed the market’ by selling at a peak and buying back later at a lower price (which then shows as a lower unrealized gain - since the bulk of the gains have then been realized). However, this is the data I have so going with it.

Ticker Yield %MV %Gain
+ Uranium 6.1% 2.9% +107.6%
+ Oil Services 0.2% +103.9%
+ Commodities 2.0% 4.8% +57.0%
+ Oil Refiners 1.6% 3.9% +56.8%
+ Tobacco 5.8% 7.5% +54.8%
+ SaaS 0.5% 28.6% +37.7%
+ SaaS Plus 1.2% 2.2% +37.5%
+ Insurance 3.6% 3.3% +29.2%
+ Software Infra 0.9% +28.5%
+ Gold miners 1.0% 4.8% +21.5%
+ Oil 2.4% 10.0% +18.6%

Nice!

Do you mind sharing the Uranium and Tobacco stocks you’ve selected?

Sure. It’s changed over time. I sold down a lot of other holdings (YCA.L, U.UN, URNM, URNJ, PDN, etc.)

Nice. Some hardcore bet on precious metals! I want to increase my gold exposure too. What are the other commodities?

Why so much exposure to commodities? Is it recent choice or has it been a while?

update: I saw another of your post and I saw that it grew naturally from c. 30% to c.50%. You sold some but looks very overweighted. What is the thinking? Inflation risk ? Recession risk?

And I was wondering whether my measly 26% in commodities was getting too high!

  • GAZPROM PJSC SPONSORED ADR (currently worthless)
  • RIO TINTO PLC
  • GLENCORE PLC
  • ANGLO AMERICAN ORD
  • THUNGELA RESOURCES
  • GULF KEYSTONE PETROLEUM LIMITED
  • DUNDEE CORP CLASS A

By choice and it has been a while. When quantitative easing (and other financial wizardry) had been going on for a while (US 2008, UK 2009, CH 2011), I started wondering about the impact on prices. Luckily I had some finance-savvy people around to explain the big picture to me. I started buying gold in 2013 and the big picture has still not changed (EU 2015).

As a phosagro and gazprom shareholder, I can commiserate.

I think we would need to move over to the “WTSHTF” section to elaborate. Here it’s about profitability.

I started equal-weight PM, MO, BTI, IMB and JT – and PM, which you seem to be missing, is the absolute goat :goat: in the portfolio. JT a close 2nd.

Most profitable in sectors? Probably financial services.

Jury’s still out on my Sberbank holding though.

Best ROI : Btc

What has happened in practice with your Russian stocks? Were you forced to sell them at price 0? Or do you still see them in your broker account but are not able to trade them?

They got transferred to a special sanctioned account where they are effectively non-tradeable.

Right now I’m assuming it is 50/50 whether they get confiscated or returned at the end of the war.

Oh, I see. I hope it turns out well in the end… What happens with the dividends? Do they go to this special sanctioned account as cash?

Honestly, I can’t remember. I think some got cancelled/confiscated for the war effort. Some got lost. I know some shareholders have made efforts to convert or set up ‘c’ account in Russia to receive the dividends.
