Unnecessary Expense

New fun thread: What unnecessary expense have you made in the last 30 days? By unnecessary expenses, I don’t mean, taxes, medical costs (mostly necessary) etc. but things like:

  • Left CHF 150 in a restaurant (or bar, pub etc.) which I don’t usually do
  • I had the choice between two trips and opted for the more expensive one, which doesn’t actually offer that many advantages
  • I treated myself to a massage, but it wasn’t worth it

Things that you think in hindsight: That wasn’t necessary and could have been avoided.

I’ll start: I bought a new iPad. The old iPad still gets updates, but somehow I convinced myself that I would be more productive with a new one (sorting to-dos, planning in the morning, etc.).

I went to Ottolenghi in London during my stay last week, unnecessary, but it was very nice and i had a good time.

I’m using the more expensive parking option, closer to work, in order to avoid being 2 min late.

I’m also paying a bill that I could potentially contest if I were willing to put 1-2 hours contesting it just for the peace of mind (the bill itself is for more than what I can trade 2h of my time for).

I made that mistake too. If anyone is interested, just send me a PM. I’d be happy to sell it.

I’m really bad with this kind of admin stuff. I paid up 5k for broken drain and didn’t claim it on insurance as I was too stressed to handle the admin at the time. For this reason, I no longer buy optional insurance.

I bought a music CD, only to find out that I already had it. Twice.

I had to buy stuff I know I already have just because it would take me too long to find it in my unorganized mess!

Went to London for the weekend and had to pay 19 EUR for the electronic visa, only to see the top of the buildings fade into fog and have breakfast in an unheated coffeeshop. ETA added NOTHING to the full experience!

In the past 3 months, I’ve been replacing the last few electronics devices that were not USB-C. They were still working well, but i’m tired of having to carry 3 different chargers everywhere I go, and looking for them around the house…

Jan : E-reader / Feb : Airpods / March : Work Headset (Jabra).
Each of these things costed me ~100-120CHF to replace. But I’m now 100% USB-C !!

P:S : Old versions were given to friends/family/colleagues - Nothing is going to waste

l’m thinking of buying a Macbook Neo, just because I think it’s crazy how much value for money it is (and all that for Apple premium quality). But I really don’t have any proper usecase for a Laptop and it would probably just sit around doing nothing…

Eine neue Übersicht auf Galaxus zeigt, wie viel Geld du über die Jahre und Monate beim Onlineshopping ausgegeben hast. Auch Ausgabenlimiten für Einkäufe kannst du jetzt setzen.

Interesting - I wonder whether they had focus groups to determine whether that feature is going to give them more or less business going forward

Then again, they also introduced the “Warenkorbfüller” that displays stuff they think you want anyway so you can easily reach the free delivery threshold…

Maybe it‘s appealing to gamify systems and people want to chase highscores or something
