Tax Implications on Moving Between Cantons

I lost my job at the end of 2023 and moved from Zurich to Schwyz in mid-2024 to reduce costs. My hope was to find a remote job, but unfortunately, that didn’t work out. My understanding is that I’ll be taxed in Schwyz for 2024 since I’m registered there.

I’ll be starting a new job in Zurich soon and am considering moving back to Zurich sometime in 2025. Could this raise any questions or issues regarding the tax savings for 2024? Has anyone experienced something similar?

I don‘t understand why this could be problem?

People move cantons all the time. This is a perfectly normal situation. We are allowed to move around as we please.

Why should ZH care for 2025 what your Schwyz tax return was for 2024?

You file your taxes in ZH for 2025 in 2026 and that‘s it.

If you think about it from high level

  • You spent almost 12 months in Schwyz and you will pay taxes for 2024 in Schwyz
  • For other years 2023, 2025 etc you will pay taxes in Zurich.

Sounds alright to me. If you get a question from tax office. Just explain to them the situation. But I don’t think you will even get a question

Tax office gets more involved if people have two residences and they register in low tax area. If you only live in one place at a time , what else can you do

As long as you registered in the gemeinde in Schwyz in 2024, and then again in the gemeinde Zurich in 2025 (when you move). I don’t see any issue.

No issues whatsoever. You pay taxes in the place you resided in on Dec 31.

You are taxed where you are located at the end of the year, some people even ‘abuse’ this by moving towards the end to save on taxes, and it’s perfectly legal to do so.
