I am approaching the 40 years old line (38M), I am in good health, do sports, eat (almost) healthy, don’t drink much. I don’t wear glasses, don’t have dental problem, everything ok.
I have no kids and don’t know if I will have some in the future. What sure is: I will probably stay in Switzerland for the rest of my life.
I heard from a good friend, that I could be interesting to get a “supplementary insurance” before I am turning 40, because after this, it will be difficult to get one.
I could use a supplementary insurance to reimburse a part of my fitness abo (50% from 600.-).
Do you have any insight? I am really mustachian regarding insurance (changing every year, with the highest franchise).
I don’t have a supplementary health insurance. I do not need most things it offers. I guess it becomes more and more difficult to obtain it with age as any pre-existing condition might lead to an exclusion of benefits for that condition.
If you need an ambulance one day you pay at least half of the costs.
My VVG covers:
Kranken/Unfall/Transportrettung 90% max 20’000 Fr. /year
My VVG also pays the the difference of the hospital tarif if you are in a hospital (general sector) in another canton as your canton of residence, which can be more expensive if you compare Graubünden with Zurich.
And of course some other less important advantages.
This is likely something you could subscribe to later without ‘precondition’ issues ?
This may also be available for subscription later ? Question is: how likely this scenario is based on your health condition, lifestyle, precedents…and whether you could cover the additional costs yourself - if needed ? A risk tolerance issue, as usual
I have one insurance with the whole package in it.
I also made the experience of one (mustachian) uncle who quit his supplemental insurance, got cancer in his 40ies and needed a lot of Krankentransport, special medicaments which arent on the list of KVG and this for years. He highly regretted that no VVG covered at least some of the costs (mine: 50% on all medicaments).
The insurance will tell you its impossible to insure (VVG) a burning house…(ill person).
The problem with supplemental insurance is that a insurer that is good now can be bad in 20 years, but you won’t be able to switch due to pre-existing conditions. Once had a conversation with someone who deals with insurance and its law. His feedback: There are smaller, medium and larger-sized insurance companies in Switzerland. Just choose one of the larger ones.
This is what I thought too, and then I thought about the main reasons I one night need am ambulance ride. Correct me if I’m wrong:
Ambulance ride for accident: accident insurance pays in full.
Ambulance ride for sudden severe illness requiring a subsequent hospital stay: paid for in big parts by the canton because of hospital stay. How much would the insured person pay? I’m not sure here.
Medical transport not requiring an ambulance: much cheaper than an ambulance ride. Quite possibly by taxis in many cases.
Few years ago - during summer - my son was bitten by a bee while at the public swimming pool, had a strong reaction and was brought to the hospital by ambulance… the bill was quite ‘salty’ but - IIRC - we had to pay only 50% or something like that (it was still close to 1000 chf…)
Even for a 1000 ambulance ride, since you’re not likely to be doing many of these, it doesn’t seem to makes sense to pay 100s each year for insurance to cover just this.
It’s cancer so for years it went:
Hospital stay
Outpatient
Went home
Follow up with doctor (wife drove him, 100km drive as treatment was ony possible in ZH)
Relapse
Ambulance drove him directly to ZH (50% max 500 Fr was paid)
Repeat this procedure.
Over time he got immune to some medicaments, responded well to others which weren’t on the list of KVG, so he paid from his pocket.
This can be a reality not having a VVG, he had the means to cover the costs for himself, have you?
Just sharing the story, don’t need to convince anybody. All the best
I will share my story. I have some problems with hearing and was prescribed hearing aids for chf 7k, half of the amount is covered by AHV/IV and I got additional chf 1,5k from my supplementary insurance and was pretty happy about that.
I’ve been looking into this topic myself recently.
I am thinking of getting a “flex” hospital insurance, with the lowest premium and highest deductible I can find. This would be the CSS myFlex, with a premium of approx 13CHF/Month and a max. deductible of 14k/year.
The only reason I want to get it, is to protect myself from the tail risk of becoming severely ill and needing access to the top specialist in Switzerland. I always thought that should that happen, I would just pay out of pocket. But I’ve heard, that certain doctors/hospitals/clinics don’t take patients unless they have supplementary private/semi-private insurance, even if they would be able to pay out of pocket.
Btw don’t just look at the current price, but also at how it evolves over time (some insurances have some very steep progression until 60yo – which is when you might need it), others might stop the progression around 45yo, etc.
Which complementary insurance could cover drugs or specialists not covered by AVS.
I have already thought LAmal will cover cancer treatments in fill and not the basic.
I Can’t remember the other discussing that was mentioning the complementary insurance with a stable contribution over the years (CSS?).
