SBB Half fare PLUS

I live in Zurich and usually use Multiple tickets. They give a 10% discount on fares. So I guess from now on I don’t need to care about those anymore since via SBB app I save at least 20%. Which even means I don’t need the ZVV app anymore which is great for me but probably not really intended by ZVV.

The name is a bit confusing. I guess it has nothing to do with half fare travelcard ? Or does it include half fare travelcard, as the word PLUS suggests.

It doesn’t include half fare.

Is it possible to pay for Halbtax Plus with Reka money in form of a Reka-Card? If so, is it possible to do this online?

Yes & yes. (20 chars)

Thank you! Buying Reka money at 20% off and using that to pay Halbtax Plus makes train rides even cheaper.

I would guess so, I paid with SBB vouchers directly at my local SBB counter. However, online could be a problem.

You were able to use your SBB Voucher which is usually restricted to Abonnemente (GA, Streckenabo etc.)?

On a side note, the “gemeindeticket” doesn’t exist anymore (some cities have it until end of the month).

The vouchers I had were unrestricted, called “Geschenkkarte”, like cash but only usable for SBB.

I have 9.40 CHF left on my Halbtax Plus 1000 and can’t spend it for a ticket. I was expecting that the residual amount could be combined with another payment method.

I now use the SBB app with ‚plus’ to buy bus/ tram tickets in ZH and Geneva as well. Good for using up smaller amounts, too I suppose.

You just haven’t found the right ticket yet.

By the way: just curious… how come you‘ve spent CHF 990.60, when the Halbtax Plus was introduced only three months ago? Wouldn’t a higher tier (or GA travel card) be preferable at your rate of spending?

Yes, I need a bigger one. The 1000 version was like a test. I will probably buy the 2000 version now. My commute is not very regular and can be 1 to 3 times a week, that’s why I cancelled my first class GA.

Actually, it just turned out SBB hasn’t quite thought this one through:

Fierz stand vor einem kafkaesken Dilemma: «Aufbrauchen konnte ich mein Guthaben nicht, weil ich kein Billett für 29.40 finden konnte», sagt er. «Entweder kostete es weniger, dann blieb ein Restbetrag und ich konnte kein neues Halbtax plus kaufen. Oder es kostete mehr, dann konnte ich es mit dem alten Abo nicht kaufen.»

Perhaps SBB expects its clients to masterfully combine local tickets to bring down any residual balance to exactly zero

I managed to reach 1.80 left but now i’m lost and can’t spend nor buy another one! What a fail

Had they hired me for a brief 15-minute advisory session, I could have told them.

It’s not as if no one ever had to deal with residual balances on iTunes Store or investment accounts.

What a shitshow. The whole 300-step buying process should have been an indication that the user-centered design process probably wasn’t followed.

For me just the ultra-confusing name containing “Half Fare” without actually offering you Half Fare tickets was an indicator of the poorly designed initiative.

According to their FAQ it should be possible to renew it even if you are not at 0.

Once you have completely used up your customer deposit and are in the bonus phase, you can make another deposit for a new package and then receive the bonus that comes with it.

So it should “just” be a technical issue?
