After checking that the same flight was 50% cheaper when booking from Spain then from Switzerland I decided to purchase a commercial VPN, quiet cheap, savings of one flight pays for a few years.
Unfortunately I did not know that you get an additional 3 months free if somebody refers you. I did purchase NordVPN. If anybody is interested in the 3 free months, here is the link:
BTW: to purchase the VPN I did use my private VPN in Switzerland; VAT is way lower in Switzerland.
Did you delete all site data before switching country? It was EasyJet and I did use a private VPN in Switzerland to verify the higher price compared to a direct line in Spain. Unfortunately I don’t have a private VPN in Spain, that is why I bought NordVPN.
Don’t know when I need to book a flight next time, I’ll update you all.
Last time I checked Easyjet did not work with tor browser. Could have saved me a few buck. Thanks for the description of the exit node functionality anyhow.
Indeed, very useful. Tried this summer with hotels.
As @cubanpete_the_swiss mentioned, you have to cleanyour browser data for the site (cookies…etc.). Or Simply use private navigation from your browser.
Never gotten a better deal with a VPN when
looking at the cheapest option on Swoodoo or Skyscanner (which often leads you to Opodo & co. as intermediaries). Maybe that trick only works with those that are not the cheapest option in the first place?
Surprised that you were able to find cheaper flights.
I’ve had Nord VPN for a few years now but have never managed to find cheaper flights - they seemed to be priced the same regardless of which country I was picking.
Did use google flights from Spain, then told my wife to book from Switzerland directly with Easyjet. There was a 50% price difference, so I booked from Spain.
Sorry, was using my private Internet from Spain and my wife from Switzerland. Then I deleted all site data like cookies and connected to my private VPN in my home in Switzerland and yes… 50% more for the same flight. So I just booked from Spain. But the flight was starting in Switzerland anyhow…
Now the question is whether you got a better price than most people, or whether for some reason EasyJet thinks that there is lots of money to make from your Swiss IP.
But in any case, if you see it happening, definitely makes sense to use a VPN. Personally, I gave up after testing it during ~5 different occasions, and never seeing a difference in my setup…
I have seen different pricings when going directly to an online flight tickets agent like opodo against being forwarded from a meta search engine like skyscanner or kayak
So I thought: let’s try. I bit the bullet and bought NordVPN for 2 years, there is a 30 days money back anyway. Well I bought it this morning and still I am not receiving the bloody activation code. I wrote to support, let’s see…
Ok, finally got the code. Connected through Madrid, cleaned cache/cookies/opened a private window: Can’t see any price difference for an easyjet flight (or Swiss for that matter) I’d like to buy…
Same here. Even checked the same flight and prices are now exactly the same. Not sure if I did delete all site data. Actual price is higher than what I paid but it is the same from Switzerland and from Spain. Seems the Spain rebate is gone…
Have only one computer available here, makes it a little complicated to compare.
