New Vanguard World funds with 0.07% TER VGLA / VALL

I thought it’s 1M CHF+ and well, to not “lose” the platinum, you probably need 1.5-2M just at their brokerage…

And even then, the savings are like 0.5-0.1% in margin interest.

It matches my observations so far. However, whether or not you match the requirements is calculated using 4 rolling months and once you match them, you’re good for 1 full year so the trading requirements could be gamed and trading concentrated in certain months to make keeping the Platinum package easier. Whether it’s worth the opportunity cost of not having the money invested while waiting for the proper time is another question.

Might be, yes, that they have additional criteria.

I think criteria depends on your broker.
IBKR requires the security to have

  • an average daily volume (ADV) exceeding $5 million
  • and a market capitalization over $5 billion to qualify for fractional treatment.

That can’t be correct for recurring investments. I can open them for etfs with multiple 100m in aum.

I consider it a total non-issue.

0.05% or even 0.23% you quoted is well within - or actually less than - normal day-to-day price fluctuation. What the price might move within an hour or two. Basically noise. The difference of buying an hour sooner or later that day. We’re speaking overoptimisation that’s worth stressing about on a long-term investment.

If anything, it’s the recurring costs and ongoing charges that are going to make a meaningful difference, especially if they scale with the size of your investment, like fund costs/expenses and custody fees charged by the broker.

Even if we’re investing monthly - on a somewhat realistic order size of CHF 1000 - 10’000 - that’s a CHF 5 or CHF 23 in fees. We’re all making much worse (and much more financial “impactful”) financial decisions every month or week.

These requirements are for European shares and ETF.

Also can’t be correct. I just tested it with ucits AVEM that has 250 million aum, and just created a recurring investment.

How about buying with IBRK and moving every CHF/USD 100-250k batches to a Swiss broker without yearly fees? Best of both world, imo.

IBKR will probably close your account after the second batch the latest. They want you to have your assets with them and not just as a cheap buying and exchanging platform. The fees are this low to amass aum after all.

Only good if you’d be able to move those tranches out again for 0 cost - but that’s not possible

I don’t think IBKR will close the account because people moved their positions

I understand when people use IBKR for currency exchange and get warnings. But position transfer is like wire transfer. They cannot make fuss about FOP

I have moved majority of my positions to SQ & Saxo. I still move some from time to time. But I don’t trade that much anymore on IB, so the value transferred is not that high anymore

Do you have any data or testimonials to back this up?

Disappointing – no CHF trading currency

I noticed that the new Vanguard ETFs are only available in USD as a trading currency – there’s no CHF-traded listing so far.

For us Swiss-based investors, this means unnecessary FX conversion costs on every buy and sell. Somewhat ironic for a product that markets itself on cost efficiency with a 0.07% TER.

I’ve reached out to Vanguard directly via email and asked them to consider listing a CHF-traded variant.

The next guy to ask them about VALL in CHF should attach this thread.

It will probably make Vanguard employees smile.

What is your strategy if you are holding VT?

  • Keep buying VT or
  • Keep VT and buy VALL in the future or
  • Sell VT and buy VALL

For the latter case: How do you sell VT?

  • Everything at once or
  • Step by step and using fresh money to buy VALL at the same time.

I assume that it will take 3 days until the cash is available (1 day for the sell transaction and 2 days for the currency conversion).

I asked about all of them

Not if sell and buy are in the same currency (sold VT bought VALLD in USD same hour).
