How do you approach “I want to go for a one day ski trip”
where i basically mean using a day pass in one of the sizable swiss resorts.
The best I know is to use the snow & rail offers from sbb. They are available for most of the resorts that are good for a day trip.
do you have any tricks?
small stuff:
early bird: best slopes, snow & least people early in the morning
If you are really into skiing/snowboarding I recommend you to pick one place per season. You can get a all season pass for many places that are cost the equivalent of 8-12 one day passes. Every extra day is basically free.
To me even more rewarding is to start ski touring. Most resorts offer ski touring tickets with prices at a fraction of a day pass or even better you do tours that don’t involve ski lifts.
Snow Republic’s “Ski Passport”. Goes for CHF 44.- before season (then 66.-, then 88.-). It allows you to buy two ski passes for the price of one. The catch? You can use it only once per resort, and most of participating resorts are in Western Switzerland.
Ticketcorner Friends & Members subscription (50 CHF per year), you get 20% off in 40 ski resorts for up to 6 (I think) people: http://www.friends-members.ch/angebote/ski. I haven’t used this one yet, but since it works for my favorite resort (Arosa/Lenzerheide), I may consider it next year.
Skioo.ch. Apart from not having to queue and thinking what type of ski pass to buy (they promise to charge you the best price for you day), the also have discounts sometimes. The card worth it even w/o the discounts, in my opinion. The only problem are some legacy resorts that don’t support it (what a disgrace! ).
I would like to take my child for a daytrip of skiing (maybe only half a day of skiing) driving from Aargau. I’m a bit shocked at the prices. Can you recommend any hacks for cheap tickets. I am looking for some blue slopes. Doesn’t have to be big.
For beginner / small kid you could go to Kandersteg. They have a kids park called Oeschiland with 2 small lifts which are free. So you only need to pay for the gondula.
Otherwise Hasliberg is quite familiy friendly. Especially if you stay one night, the panorama hotel has fair deals with half pension and ticket included. In the huts you can get a familiy pot with spaghetti etc at a fair price.
If you live in the Geneva region (taking deep breath) -
consider French resorts, such as Chamonix, Megeve, Grand Massif, Morzine/ Avoriaz, Les Contamines, La Clusaz,… most within 1 h driving distance. Most have free parking available.
Full fare lift pass prices for those decent-sized resorts are creeping up - now starting at a little over €50 to around €70 (Chamonix).
Sometimes there are significantly discounted offers available on buyclub.ch, reliably so twice per season for Chamonix.
If you have a French address in the region, you can acquire the ‚GIA‘-card for about €6 which will give you discounts around €10 for above resorts, except Grand Massif, if you don’t you can still get it through a Cern ski club membership - which costs extra, they do however run guided ski outings with buses as well (assume they still do anyway, good option if you don’t have a car). GIA gives discounts for non-ski activities and some shops as well.
A different scheme, „Ski a la carte“, gives discounts for Grand Massif and many of the large, more distant Savoie ski resorts.
Some resorts offer free lift passes for kids below 8.
There are smaller and less expensive resort choices available as well.
Then you can use the cashback system of magic pass itself (“be magic”), which is around 1% (5 CHF cashback for 500 points), one gets points by paying with a registered credit card (1 point per 1 CHF spent at the magic pass locations), for each visit at a magic pass location (20 points), participating at promos, …
But, there’s another hack if you have a corner card.
You get 20% of off selected ski areas if you buy your ticket here:
andermatt has a half-fare price:
Just to add, although not very mustachian in any other way, but can be worth considering:
if you stay in a hotel in Engadin (it needs to be one participating, but most of them are), you get the day pass for half the price for any ski arena in the valley.
You can also buy some ski pass with raiffeisen member plus program.
I plan to buy magic pass and use it to go in mountain during the summer with kids. This way it can be amortized faster.
