Loyalty programs in Switzerland (Coop, Migros) [2025]

I couldn’t find the answer in a thread so it might be a repeated question:

Is paying with AMEX (1% Cashback) and scan your Coop/Migros code (1% cashback) still the go-to system?

My friend told me last week that he uses the Coop Card for every transaction in Coop and the Migros Card for every transaction in the Migros. So now I’m not sure which system is better in the end. Has anyone ever done the calculation?

The best method is to scan the store card with the barcode to collect points, and then pay with the Amex or Certo card.

Yes collect 1% from (Cumulus or Supercard) points and 1% from cashback credit card Certo etc. all for free

Total yield would be 2% on Migros and Coop expenses. Much higher than interest in bank

Does it also works if you pay with the Migros Visa Cumulus CC?
Do I get the cumulus points from default + the points from the card?

The system is described here. There is no double counting

Then is the Cumulus Credit card pointless? The cumulus program by itself already gives 1% no matter what payment method. By using the credit card I would be getting +0% at end then? or another 1%?. Is the only adding benefit the 0.3% from other stores?

Yes it’s pointless for shopping at migros if you are cumulus member already, if you want to extra optimize can use a different credit card when shopping there.

A big advertisement is the 1 Cumulus point per 1 CHF spent in Migros.

Except you get this anyway by being part of Cumulus (no cc required for that).

When I signed up, I thought it was on top of the normal points you get just by already being member of Cumulus. Nope. I went through the last couple of statements on both ends, and the points on my Cumulus statement attributed to the cc match my cc spending in the Cumulus statement period (these for me are always two months and so two cc bills fall into this period) minus the amount spent at Migros, divided by 3.

You would get more back by scanning your cumulus barcode in the migros with your migros cc card, but then paying with centro and having Migros as one of your 3 merchants to get the 1% cashback. Or even without doing that, because the Migros spending doesn’t count for the total spending where you get 1 point per 3 chf spent.

Yeah I thought it was well known you should use Migros cc at coop and vice versa :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Calling it a scam might be a bit of an exaggeration. The benefits offered by the card itself are still excellent compared to other credit cards in Switzerland. It’s rather the Cumulus program that could be optimized in this regard, but I wouldn’t go so far as to call it a scam.

Both Coop Superpoints and Migros Cumulus codes are now available as stickers, BTW.

More in 2025 terms, both are available in the respective apps :joy:.

Denner accepts AMEX, but there is no loyalty program.

Well, it’s a static code. You can also have it tattooed. More serious: I simply put the Cumuls (Migros) and Supercard (Coop) in my Apple Wallet. Although this is not officially supported, you can use Pass4Wallet to place any static barcode in the Apple Wallet.

Actually I have them both “officially”/“natively supported” in poinz app.

if you enlarge the app like a widget you have the code on hand in case

No scam
There is no mention of additional points anywhere in their documents. I believe you just assumed that to be the case.

There is a benefit of using the Cumulus CC at Migros: you don’t have to scan the Cumulus card to collect Cumulus points.

If that added convenience is worth 1% of purchase volume is for everyone to decide for themselves.

P.S.: the real benefit of Supercard et al. comes from additional promotions. Once a month or so you get 1555 points (CHF 15.55) when shopping for over CHF 250 with Coop Online (free delivery over CHF 200). And (in my region at least) there’s an additional 500 points when getting it delivered Tuesdays.

So CHF 23 (including the 1% of 250.–) saved, almost 10%. With such deliveries, I usually purchase big, heavy and/or massively reduced items that don’t perish quickly, like 24 cans of beer canned tomatoes.

P.P.S.: Home delivery (to your doorstep, so even to a flat on the seventh floor without an elevator) is especially advantageous as it was my main reason why it took me so long to sell my car (that was a joy to drive and that I miss to this day, but couldn’t justify the cost anymore).

I mean only for the very pedantic. It obviously had the intended effect.

You are right, they do not explicitly say “1 point on top of normal Cumulus points”. But neither did they say this isn’t how it works. And the way they did formulate it most certainly leads one to the conclusion it is extra points for paying with the card.

I understand you feel misguided
But I think it would be a weird to say on marketing material the following -:

„You get 1 point for every 100 CHF spent but be aware that this one point is not on top of cumulus loyalty program“

By the way , I am wondering what if someone scans cumulus loyalty card & then pay with cumulus credit card? Does the system somehow know that both these cards belong to same person?

Yes, it knows that.

Problem is that the same articles (or very similar ones) would still be 10+% cheaper at Lidl/Aldi.

For people that shop anyway at Coop (or to some extend Migros) those points are nice to have, but it is probably not worth for regular Lidl/Aldi shoppers to buy 250.- via Coop Online once a month.
