White part… that’s forest or farmland
correction: 18 francs (Stadt ZH).
Also, don’t send a new one every time. But promise to update it once you are getting selected.
I know, it’s all nice from a utilitarian point of view. My flat is exactly like that too. It’s just too much 90-degree blocks and too much concrete for my taste. Looks very sterile and planned, like a french garden.
I don’t know if you have seen the latest developments in Schlieren, they have built a lot around the train station, both sides, the so called Am Rietpark. It’s mostly 5 years old or younger. Looks quite “oerlikoney” too me. Along the Pfingstweidstrasse in Hard is also similar, maybe even more futuristic soulless dystopian kind of style.
Good to know that these things exist. However it seems like a population density map.
You can probably not afford LK1 (just walk to Restaurant Sonnenberg, Aurorastrasse and you’ll see what I mean) - and also supply will be close to zero. LK2 is the cobble-stone areas of the old city with 2 meter ceilings… err, no thanks. LK1 Oberengstringen is super far from the city and there’s no tram, just buses (stuck in traffic jams every day).
Gockhausen for example gets to enjoy all flights from Zürich airport if the wind blows a certain direction. Dübendorf might be LK2, but… err no thanks (and I’ll stay PC by not saying anything more )
We live in an LK5 area and it’s dead silent here, kids are playing in the internal courtyard, we have all amenities in a car-free walkabout zone at walking distance - and it’s relatively cheap.
Do walk around, most areas are nicer than what it looks on the map. I learned that when my kid was small and I had to be out with him every day so that he could sleep
You should see how they renovated some of these flats. But old town is mostly prestige, you need to be lucky to get a quiet place with good standard. There is some LK2 in Wollishofen or Tiefenbrunnnen, but not much. Fluntern and Rigiblick have a great view, but they’re not any close to a train station.
That’s good to know. Here I have a loud main street on one side (makes the balcony totally dirty, talk about clean Zurich air!!!), and screaming kids during the day, and people having chats on the balconies
in the evening on the other side.
Ooh I see you live near south italians
Don’t correlate income with danger, it doesn’t always work here.
Also I’ve visited quite some new buildings in a brown zone on that map. The gentrification is changing everything.
It’s really crazy to me to hear about your experiences in Zurich. I live around 30min away from St. Gallen and a newly built 3.5room apartment runs you around 1750+NK. The location is pretty good, you’re on the autobahn really quickly and have schools, coop, migros in walking distance basically.
Worrying about getting rejected? Not here. If your Betreibungsauszug looks good every landlord will instantly take you.
Sidenote: If anybody’s looking for an apartment like that, message me.
I’ve been around st. gallen and it’s lovely.
Just two big downsides:
- wages/jobs
- taxes.
Maybe FIRE there?
I lived in Zurich for 10 years (actually near Stettbch Station, so not really “Zurich City”.
Now I live in Fribourg, 15 min walking distance to Fribourg Bahnhof, near the autobahn (but behind the hill so no noise), all kind of things are near (kita, doctors, bakeries, grocery stores) and for a 5 room apartment with 120 m^2 + private garden with playground (1000 m^2) + private piece of forest (lots of trees in the garden) we pay 1802 + NK. And I see the mountains from my window
My quality of life compared to costs is incredible right now. Unachievable in Zurich.
Interesting take @Grog, but you still commute to a job in Zurich or you found something nearby?
Because for most the quality of life would decrease with a long and/or complicated commute.
Right now is all from home usually I commute to bern and take the bike on the train so is like 35 min, by car (we have our own named parking place at the company it would be 20-25 min)
My wife on the other hand is walking distance 5 min to her job. That’s an advantage of living in a city, although small. I guess if you move into a city at least one of the two should be at walking distance, or it makes no sense.
I’m lucky I got into a an american software company in Bern, so pay is at Zurich level, but I’m aware mine is a very special case.
- The job market in IT is actually quite decent, but yes, wages are obviously a bit lower than in Zurich.
- I don’t think taxes are that much more. Especially if you don’t plan do live but a few minutes outside. There are some municipalities that are quite low in taxes.
It is indeed, but good to know such cases exist, good find!
I actually was in Fribourg last weekend. An interesting town, quite old, very hilly, but there isn’t much to see or do there . Then we went to Murten and it looks incredible there, a little gem of a town.
What I like about Zurich is that you can just go to HB and then start walking. You will always find a new side street you never saw before and it takes a long time to reach the city border. When walking around the old town, there is a lot going on (at least during the day). When walking along the lake, you can enjoy scenic views of the town or the mountains, drop by for a coffee or a drink. I can do this again and again, when I don’t know what to do. I would miss it a lot in a small place like Fribourg.
Did you buy “the” cake? Say yes…
I think we have different way of enjoing this country. I personally like all possible sides. Maybe my “problem” is that I should change place every X years to feel the same “excitement” I feel when I visit a new city.
I agree and I lived in Zurich for 10 years, I quite know the difference. There are hidden gems in Fribourg but of course the variety is not as big as in Zurich. Some good restaurants etc. What is remarkable in Fribourg is the nature just outside the city. I walk or take the bike and go down along the Sarine river and is amazing, you end up in places you are convinced you are in Canada, no joking, and maybe you walk 15 min or biked for 5. In Zurich you would need a looooong way to go to have the same wilderness feeling, trust me. I miss that when I lived there. To go from HB to a nice walk along the lake let’s be honest it will take 10-20 min with tram etc. With 20 minutes bus you get this scenic view and have endless walk available, just not in an urban settings
But this is going off topic
That’s some breathtaking view. Where is this exactly? (edit: I guess it’s Lac de la Gruyere?)
yes. Golf de la Gruyere pont-la-ville,
This exact place is 18 min car drive, maybe a bit more with a bus, but there are other similar location more on the bus line so my statement is still valid
The ‘you are convinced you are in Canada’ comment made me laugh. I am Canadian and probably the two most ‘dreamiest’ places for many Canadians are Hawaii and … Switzerland. We always view Switzerland to be more beautiful for some reason but I guess that Calgary to Vanc drive can’t really be beaten, in particular for its diversity of mountains, glaciers, rodeos, winemaking, lakes, fishing and wildlife, gastronomy - OK I should be more proud!
lol I was also confused by that sentence. Is this a new metric?
