I am first going on https://www.skyscanner.ch/ and then check discovercars etc. to see the final price with or without insurance.
Always compare on different sites and then check directly the website of the three cheapest providers since they sometimes offer the same rate but have a 10% discount if you subscribe to their newsletter for example.
Depends if one of the card offers benefits like some insurances if you paid with that card. Otherwise I would say it doesn’t matter. Sometimes currency arbitrage is possible if you don’t choose CHF but EUR, USD or something else and then pay with a card with the least currency fees possible to end up lower than the CHF price.
You would not only be challenging a transaction but a breach of contract by the rental company. If you take one of the more known ones, doesn’t have to be an international one, a well-known domestic brand is most of the time as good as the big players, I don’t think you will have any problems.
In general:
Mustachian car rental is using the cheapest option possible and use the insurance from Rental Car Insurance | Save Up to 50% — RentalCover. If you want to sleep well, just take the most expensive option with everything included and no downpayment or insurance deductible.
I do this as well. But in my experience directly booking from the provider is more expensive than going for the “aggregator” (for the car I’m looking at the moment the price doubles).

Thanks, I checked them, I’m not sure it’s worth it. My “mustachian” way in the insurance realm is “avoid insurance except when not being covered would bankrupt you”. The rental car doesn’t fall in this category (touch wood
). Thanks for your input!
Interesting.
But I think I got a yearly add-on (explicit for rental cars, not 3rd party vehicles) with AXA for more or less the same price as a week’s cover here.
How much would that add-on cover? I used to have one also for cars borrowed from family members/friends and rental car companies. However, if I recall the coverage in terms of car damage was capped at 3k and deductible was fairly high. I had quite a good experience with RentalCover also particularly in combination with Radicant covering also the CDW if I recall but since this no longer exists wondering what such an add-on via an insurance company would cost per year and what it covers.
With AXA it’s
- 3000 coverage for damage to car (which is fine in most cases); 5m for liability/damage to others
- 500 deductible (this is arguably high indeed)
- ~50 extra premium
Do I understand correctly that the above service has no deductible (i.e. full coverage)?
Then it might be a good deal indeed,
as I don’t typically rent that often.
Will revisit my policy for next year. ![]()
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing. Hm, I think I had something along those lines also in terms of coverage. I’m not a car guy but I suspect 3k could be slightly limited depending on the car, country, and damage of course. Secondly, I would check if it covers windscreen, tires, or undercarriage. Knowing insurance I woudln’t be surprised if this is somehow excluded or limited and mentioned in the small print.
While I took the insurance in the past from Rentalcover I was luckily never in the situation I had to report any damages. If I recall correctly, I do think they have a zero excess - no deductible policy. However, I think you need to include and pay for the CDW from the rental dealership in order to have full protection from Rentalcover. So this adds additional costs and then of course every time you rent paying for rental cover will easily exceed the 50 CHF/year from an add-on.
