Interactive Brokers Q&A [2025]

But more loan means more potential upside

Last update on the matter: the money was credited on the 1st August (!) around 13h.
According to the inquiry answer from Postinance, the payment was wired the same day (25.07), while citibank received it 5 days later (after I opened the inquiry).
It is not clear to me who/what is the culprit of such a delay, but I am not happy since it is supposed to be a ā€œlocalā€ transfer (and I’ll have to pay 30 CHF).
Next time, I’ll avoid the same day transfer with Postfinance even if I am not sure that’s the root cause of this incident.

Is it just me* or is everyone with IB accounts getting warning emails with regards Phishing from IB (ā€œremember to think before you clickā€), approximately every 10 days, for at least about 2-3 months now IIRC? Sending at this frequency, it seems there’s quite a wave of cases? Has anyone had an IB phishing attempt?

* I may be deemed in a more risk-prone age category for phishing than the young uns in this forum.

  • Ja, same same
  • No, less / never
  • I get this warning even more often than every 10 days

TWS is the most fully featured and I love the efficient traditional interface of TWS Classic, but for basic trading, I just use the IBKR Mobile app on my phone. This is very fast and streamlined. Sometimes, I can be done before TWS has finished loading.

I’m glad your money finally arrived. This may be a stupid question: What does Citibank have to do with this? When making deposits, IBKR asks me to transfer the money to a UBS account.

Maybe the DTC participant: What Is the Depository Trust Company (DTC) in Banking?.

More out of curiosity to learn something: Why is an american trust Company needed for a local CHF transaction? From the customer’s perspective we’re talking about Postfinance to UBS:

Postfinance (local, holder: retail customer) --> UBS (local, holder: IBKR US) --> IBKR (non local)

Maybe Citibank is between UBS and IBKR? But I have expected that this would no longer be relevant for the customer and that IBKR book the money as soon as it arrived at UBS.

For me, the IBKR CHF account is actually at Citibank, not at UBS.

Or at least it was at some point this year. Maybe something has changed or not all IBKR accounts use the same CHF account for deposits.

Oh, that explains why Citibank is involved. Interesting, I make 1 deposit per month, and until now it has always been to an UBS account (I have only been an IBKR customer since January 2025).

Maybe there are differences in how IBKR handles this :slightly_smiling_face:

I even wondered if those mails might be a phishing attempt themselves. Make them look legit enough, spam enough to hit some customers and make them go unsubscribe via the mail and conveniently log into in with their credentials to change their notification settings.

Have you tried moving the IBKR app from one smartphone to another? The messages I got that warned me about that this was happening felt so fishy that I initially thought I fell for a scam somehow.

Might be part of their security strategy; fishy communication so that users always check twice no matter whether its legit or not.

Only problem is, users get used to it.

IBKR sometimes sends official newsletters and system messages by email in which variables are not filled in. So nothing new, I guess

Here it is the info shown by Postfinance:

Recipient’s account

CH20 8909 5000 0105 6967 4

Recipient bank

Citibank N.A. Canada Square / Canary Wharf E14 5LB London

I redid the same transfer - without the same day option - from Postfinance and it took again 3.5 days to be credited on IBKR (executed on Monday morning, received on Thursday afternoon).

Honestly, it is getting frustating.

Just to confirm, you are with IBKR UK and not IBKR US right?

in my experience of 6 years, the money arrives at IBKR the next day when sent from PostFinance or YUH. The IBAN you mentioned is also what I use, along with a reference text (name, IBKR account ID) in the booking text / reference as shown by IBKR when setting up the transaction to inform them upfront.

Ofc, I am a Swiss resident and I am registered to IBKR UK.

This was my exact same experience until last month.
I will transfer either from Neon or YUH to see the difference.

Just as a FYI, late last night I did exactly the same, initiated the transfer from Postfinance with their (for me new) ā€œQR Billā€ generated by IB. A few hours later, at 2am, IB sent an email saying the funds are now available. :man_shrugging:

For the record,

I transferred some savings from Yuh on the 05.01 (QR wire) and they showed up only today 07.01.

The transfer notice marks the reception on the 05.01, but the comptabilisation two days later.

I guess IBKR don“t like me for a reason

Did you send them an ID with photo?

Check out the settlement delay, it is usually 2 days. Same goes for most type of transactions.

If you want to use the money earlier just change your account to a margin account. You will be charged interest for those two days, but that is really not much.
