IBKR: cancelling pending trade request

Hello All,

I have a question about the IBKR: I placed an order on Friday night (10:45pm CET) which is in pending state:

I made small mistake while placing and hence would like to cancel it. I did that via portal and now I see it’s in “PendingCancel” state:

With this, I am wondering if it will be certainly cancelled or I need to do anything else. Do you have any experience or any advice here?

Thank you!

it’s cancelled already

It’s weekend. Check on Monday.

@Dr.PI: If possible, I would like to make sure the order doesn’t get executed and hence checking details on weekend.

@REandSTOCK : do you mean, the PendingCancel is kind of confirmation that it won’t be executed? If go into order details, it still shows as Pending and hence wanted to clarify:

thank you both for quick replies! :folded_hands:

people seem to say it won’t be executed (it’s just you can’t actually cancel until market opens).

I have the same issue this weekend with EUR.USD. I messaged ibkr this sunday and am waiting for a reply. what instrument are you placing your trades on?

update1: I got a reply from IBKR after writing them a message stating urgent. They said I have to wait until the exchange re-opens (Sunday night in my case) for a confirmation on the cancellation. They also stated that the exchange has the right to execute the order and dismiss the cancellation request. I am quite worried as what I put through were test orders for starting to trade forex with leverage. I hope yours gets cancelled post-weekend.

Thanks for the update, @lchung234 ! In my case, it’s a regular buy order at NY Arca exchange.

I also opened a ticket yesterday and they sent similar response. Here are the main points from response, hope this might help others in future:

  • Orders in pending cancellation status indicate that cancellation request has been accepted but hasn’t been confirmed by our system yet.

  • For currency conversions attempted outside of active trading hours, the order will remain in this status until our system becomes active again.

  • You may still receive an execution while your cancellation request is pending.

  • If you try to cancel an order during an active trading session, then the reason for the Pending Cancel could be due to system or exchange issues. In this instance, we recommend calling IBKR’s Trade Issues group so we can review the pending cancellation request.

  • If you tried to submit and then cancel an order over the weekend when the exchanges are closed, then that order may not be removed from your screen until after the Interactive Brokers system becomes active again after the weekend update. That cancel request submitted over the weekend will be recognized before the exchanges re-open for the new week.

  • Please note, your order is only canceled after the exchange acts on the cancel request and confirms to IBKR that they have removed your order from the exchanges order book. In some instances, the exchange may be in the process of filling your order and will not act on the cancel request.

I just checked my order status and now it’s show cancelled (not sure exact reasons/timings):

Interesting.

The FX market officially opens at 10 PM GMT (on Sunday), which is still a couple of hours away. I guess IBKR closed this order on their own book before official FX market open.

I don’t really know much about FX trading, but I didn’t know you can specify exchanges. In fact, I thought that the FX market is decentralized across a global network of financial institutions.

Anyway, glad the cancelling worked out for you.

that’s pretty much what I can conclude from their responses as well. lessons learned for myself: If I am testing orders in the future, make it a limit long farrrrr away under the current price.

I am glad they cancelled the order for you

Or use the paper trading account (for what its purpose is)

paper account won’t serve the purpose for me in this instance as if I didn’t do it on my real account, I wouldn’t know I need extra permission to get forex leverage. There was a quiz involved. Dont think sim ac would have that.

also update: they cancelled my orders right at 2200 last night. they didn’t go through
