Health insurance for newborns

It was the same with our daughter. I got all the documents before due date and when we returned from hospitalI signed the documents and sent them back.

But it was not with CSS

Bumping this thread! We are expecting a baby in late December, and I’ve started researching insurance options.

My understanding is that dental isn’t urgent since it can be added anytime before they turn 3.

Did you find any other supplementary insurance worth it? It seems to me like basic coverage is more than enough.

I need to ask: what’s the origin story regarding your profile pic?

My son will be 4 y.o. and he will got complementary dental insurance for orthodontist only next year.

He kissed the ground at 18 mo (hands in the pocket !) and every visit at the dentist was covered by the accident insurance.

So we have this to cover him, I also recommend 0 franchise as you always go to the pediatrician the first 2 winters.

We also got him a travel insurance because we flew in the USA.

Mine don’t have any.
Note: You might as well get the cheapest one, could be less than 120 CHF / month.
Even the limited doctor choice or tele options typically exclude pediatricians in the fine print.

Me too. Even the regular check-ups and vaccines alone will make it the best options at least the first years.

Make sure you get orthodontics insurance!

Regarding the username and profile picture: There is no story behind it, and honestly, I don’t remember. Most likely, I just thought of a random username and then did a quick Google search for a matching picture. Sorry to disappoint :stuck_out_tongue:

Regarding the insurance: Thanks a lot for your answers! It seems we Mustachians have arrived at the same conclusions.

But not necessary to take out *before birth* it seems (for most insurance companies).

I am now in the boat too - and getting properly stressed out with the options that are out there.

Will try to summarize my thoughts here, so happy for others to pick them apart.
I must be missing a lot still, as every provider has a different slicing and packaging of these.
So it will be a “living” list as I find out more.

Basic insurance:

  • 0 deductible
  • Family doctor model - such that we can go to our preferred local pediatrician without having to go via phone/app/HMO center
    • Note: Sympany seems to be an exception, as children until age of 16 can always go to pediatrician first, regardless of the model (e.g. with flexhelp24)
  • Accident cover included

Supplemental insurance:

  • General ward is OK for us
  • MUST:
    • Dental/orthodontics (But that can typically wait until age 3 or so too)
    • Disability due to illness
    • Disability due to accident
  • MAYBE:
    • Alternative (osteopathy etc.)
    • Hospitalization/emergency abroad/outside Europe (I believe 2x CH costs are already covered via basic, so only matters if going to US or such)
    • Emergency transport/rescue
    • Outpatient supplementary for off-label drugs / vaccines
  • NO NEED
    • Visual aid – Covers seem low (150/year)

What are some other potential major costs for which one would not relatively easily pay for out of pocket?
(Beyond the “luxuries” like private ward etc.)

Congratulations!
Your post cover everything.

Medical cover for babies are really great. Make sure to pick a good pediatrician by recommandation. At ours we could contact the assistant by phone and email sending photos and it solved a lot of the anxiety of the mom. It also avoid ER visits if the issue is spotted very early.
The main issue I had was rise of the fewer quickly with not enough hydration twice when he was young.
Everything is covered or cost nothing regard of the stress.
Make sure to add the accident insurance at your provider. I had to use his when he kissed the ground unexpectedly at 2 yo. All dentists visits and scan were 100% covered.
My son have the same travel insurance as us with Assura but we didn’t travel away from neighboring countries.
Traveling with a toddler is exhausting and require high level of mastering logistics…

Congratulations.
Can’t comment on the additional insurance for you case, just a little note:

All insurers I compared have that. Sometimes well hidden in the regulations, but it seems not that uncommon.
Don’t ask me why they’d still offer the different models for children, and at different prices…
