Health (& Dental) Insurance for Kids?

I am not sure I quite follow you. As far as I know COMPLETA covers 75%, maximal 10’000 CHF a year. BRONZE covers 50%, maximal 1’000 CHF a year.
If the costs of misaligned teeth are 6’000 CHF, you would then get 4’500 CHF reimbursed via COMPLETA (which is well below the 10’000 threshold) and nothing additional from BRONZE. Or am I missing something?

I had another look at CSS and I think it deserves to be highlighted a bit more. Unlike most insurers, CSS already includes dental benefits in its standard myFlex Outpatient supplementary insurance. Depending on the plan, children can receive reimbursement for routine dental care (up to CHF 1,000 per year with Balance or CHF 2,000 with Premium) as well as orthodontic treatment (50% reimbursement up to CHF 12,000 with Balance or without an annual limit with Premium).

For families who want more comprehensive protection, CSS also offers a dedicated Dental Insurance. It extends reimbursement up to CHF 5,000 per year and covers major dental treatments, prosthetics and orthodontics. Combined with myFlex, the overall reimbursement can become very attractive.

Another point worth mentioning is the family discounts. If a parent has both mandatory health insurance and an eligible supplementary insurance with CSS, children can benefit from free myFlex Hospital Economy, a 50% discount on myFlex Outpatient and a 25% discount on Dental Insurance.

Overall, this makes CSS a very compelling option for families. SWICA remains an excellent insurer, but like Helsana, meaningful dental coverage generally requires adding a dedicated dental supplementary insurance from the start.

Any though about it @Daniel ?

At the parent’s evening of Kindergarten or as info from the pediatrician
Before that, in German I’d online search for “Schuluntersuchung” or “Schulzahnpflege” + Kanton. Could be an individual voucher, could be a field trip for the whole class, it’s handled differently locally.

We chose the denta bronze for our kids as one adult in our family was really unlucky wirh his teeth that tend to die off and incurr costs. Silver, I calculated, would be to costly to maintain as adults. We also have completa and it easily covers braces for our kid. We will remain easily below CHF 10’000 per year. I had expected braces to be more costly than they actually are.

I have been thinking about this supplementary dental insurance for our child over the last few days, but I am more and more undecided whether to take it out or not. We are under time pressure, as the 3-year Birthday is around the corner and after that a dental check-up might be required before getting the dental insurance. Our current situation is as follows:

  • our child already has COMPLETA which should cover orthodontic treatments (75% of the costs, up to 10K) appropriately
  • our child had an accident which resulted in a very loose baby teeth. There were some discussions whether to remove this baby tooth or not, but in the end we left it. From my understanding all future needed care and treatments resulting from this accident should be covered by the accident insurance anyways
  • The supplementary dental insurance explicitly excludes any dental treatment resulting from an accident
  • While doing our yearly check-ups abroad, the dentist also had a look at our child teeth. Besides the loose tooth from the accident, she noted nothing particular
  • Taking the 2 above points into account, I am not sure if I should feel pressured to take out the dental insurance now to avoid a dental check-up or wait a few years and reconsider it
  • The dental insurance only covers the valid fee set by the SSO. But it is not uncommon that dentist charge higher fees and then the reimbursement is less than one could expect.

I believe there’s always (i.e. every year end) an option of cancelling/switching once you don’ want/need some parts of supplemental.

Even before adulthood, maybe even year 2 if you figure you’ve overinsured.

Unless there are some different regulations with <18y/o insurances?

True but we expect the tooth issues to arrive as adults so the plan would be to keep the bronze insurance as adults. Silver would become too expensive over time.

Good points above. I just checked Sympany (our insurer) and there, in the Zusatzversicherung Plus, there are also dental corrections included up to CHF 10k. I think we might be able to cancel the dental insurance then as.

The CSS outpatient insurance offers are quite unique in that they include decent dental insurance. I used them when my kids were younger. On the whole, a good compromise between reasonable cover for orthodontics and decent dental care cover.

That said, there is no real benefit in getting everything from a single insurance offer. If combining outpatient and dental insurance works out cheaper or gives you better cover than an all-in-one solution, then it would make more sense to use multiple offers.

Bronze is taking 50% of the bill, up to 1k CHF per year. This is how I understand the Helsana documents. Until now, they reimbursed 100% of the bill I sent.

EDIT : here is the written confirmation I obtained from the insurance before starting :

One thing that is worth mentioning is that serious misalignments are covered by the DI (IV/AI) until the 21st birthday. What’s more, the mandatory health insurance also covers serious misalignments. In my experience, if a misalignment qualifies for DI cover, it will typically be accepted for mandatory health insurance cover. In that case, health insurance takes over after age 20.

Of course, there’s no way to know in advance if the DI will cover a treatment. But it can be helpful to apply early on when a misalignment occurs. If the DI accepts the case, you can ditch the supplemental insurance (unless otherwise needed).
