Dear community, I am French citizen and resident, working in Switzerland.
I do have bank accounts both in Switzerland and in France.
I am planning to invest in ETFs.
What is the recommended platform to make those investments, French or Swiss bank?
Is there any impact from each option on fiscal aspects? What are main pros / cons for each options?
Since you are French resident, I am assuming you can only buy UCITS ETFs. I think following link might be useful for you Wiki UCITS ETFs
In addition, for brokerages, following have been recommended as best ones in general depending on which type you are looking at. This is from Swiss resident perspective. I think you should check if you have specific needs which only French brokers can fulfill (like tax documents etc), then perhaps check for French brokers
Interactive brokers (international broker) - Review
Many thanks for your reply.
I can access several ETF options from various platforms (French Bank, Swiss Bank, Degiro Account)
Let s assume I will buy an SP500 ETF. Is there any impact depending on the platform and its location? (expect for the banking fees which will differ from ine to another)
For example I am Swiss resident but IB account for me is in UK.
I don’t think location of broker will make any difference.
Except the fact that Swiss brokers are subject to stamp duties for every buy/sell transaction they make for ETFs. Not sure if French brokers have same duties or not.
Edit -: I don’t see any real advantage for you to be using Swiss broker .
For French tax resident you’ll probably find better resources elsewhere (e.g. reddit has some communities), because most of the advice here won’t apply to you.
Taxation is (sadly) a lot more complex than in Switzerland so you probably don’t want to just open a brokerage account, but also consider things like PEA and life insurance (they’re actually not something to necessarily avoid like in Switzerland) first.
