Largely this will end as I’ll have gotten rid of the stuff I want to get rid of. Still, nice way to clean the house, get cash, and have other people pick it up rather than you haveing to bring it away. With AI, an advertisement is created in no time.
I will still do some online sales in 1-2 niche colleting areas where I am an expert and can source certain items in one market and sell in another with a 10x markup.
Having said that, it made me think about this forum - would there be interest in a For Sale section? Reason I ask is because at some point I may sell my current car when I buy a new-ish one. This forum seems like a good place for a transaction (a long time ago my car was an expensive luxury car, now less so!:)). In other words, some lucky buyer will have a very fun car for pennies on the dollar.
Just to be clear, I wasn’t so much intending for this thread to become a for sale section but was wondering if a separate section could make sense. I realize it may also have some downsides (old advertisement threads would need deleting?). I was thinking of eventually putting my car on this board. I could imagine another Mustachian would be very happy with it (once I’m ready to move on).
I think a separate category is a bit too much. Because I don’t think the main focus / purpose of this forum is on selling things. How about a single thread in the Coffee category? And if the thread really is being used a lot, we could discuss it again? And to prevent spam, I would specify in the thread description that only people who have reached a certain trust level or number of posts are allowed to post. There’s nothing worse than attracting people whose sole aim is to sell something, or who might even be scammers (selling involves money, money attract scammers).
Yeah, how is selling random stuff is aligned with the purpose of this forum? Also the UX of this forum is not really built for marketplace content imo.
Good idea. Let’s see how it goes. And re the questoin on how it is aligned with the purpose of this forum, I’d say that not buying things new / more expensive than necessary supports FIRE just like selling things no longer needed does rather than throwing it away.
Thats true, i just dont think this forum is built in way to support such a marketplace efficiently. I would rather welcome a thread about how to sell and buy used things in the best way - referring to existing channels. There are many platforms and ways to do that and all have their pros and cons.
but if some members see value in a actual marketplace thread - i wont stand in the way
Hm, probably brings in scammers, raises moderation demand, and might introduce legal liability. Also I don’t see the connection to this FIRE board. We even banned posting referal codes many years ago.
Platforms like Ricardo want their cut, but they also have the resources to facilitate this activity. Customer flow, filtering listings, bidding, payment resolution, tracking reputation, etc.
Personally I just don’t see volume for this to make sense. I just checked in an admin interface, over one year we had on average 45 “Daily Engaged Users”, whatever it means, scattered over Switzerland. This is even less than I thought.
There are related WhatsApp groups for Zürich and some places in Romandie, I think. There it might make a bit more sense.
In Basel area I can recommend Unimarkt. I sold many things there and also found two of my last flats there as a “Nachmieter”.
But I mainly use ricardo because like @Butch mentioned, thanks to AI it’s super easy to create an ad on the phone, just upload pics and let the magic happen And also the adress label printing makes sending a parcel by post super easy. That’s why I swallow their hefty fees.
One more aspect why I don’t see a sale section as a useful addition: our common passion does not require the purchase of physical goods. So the sale articles would have a very broad range, most of which will not be useful to most members (in Swiss German ‘chrut und rüebli’).
I imagine that I would be banned from this forum if I started selling the access to IB accounts
I just sold a bed today for CHF 2000. Enough to pay for (part of) the babyroom to which the guest room will be converted. Part of FIRE-strategy is making pennies count… of course, I’ll then wind up spending the money on some too expensive new iphone soon as well but I admit I’m flexible:)
