I start having issues with my wisdom teeth and want to get them removed. Yesterday I had an appointment to remove the first in CH (I have a small dental insurance so the cost would have been covered) but the dentist did not manage to remove it as for some reason the anesthesia product did not succeed in getting my jaw to a complete sleep (he called a colleague, I got tens of injections, stayed 2 hours on the chair, anyway a nightmare…) so I now look at the option to do it under general anesthesia. Has anyone done that and where ? the dentist told me it is possible in with them but it would cost 3k CHF to have the anesthetist come by to do the procedure + costs of the extraction. If someone has some reco for that type of procedure plus a price estimate in the border area I would be grateful for a feedback
Do you have legal insurance? Hope you do, get them involved, you’ll likely get a bill for this shoddy and ultimately failed service* and you should not pay. And now they want to sell you a much more expensive and dangerous product? Shame on them.
*I once had an eye infection, went to ER late in the day, was told yes, we have someone, wait. I waited over two hours, someone hurriedly came, looked at the eye said “I am no specialist, have a specialist see it”. I then went elsewhere and just caught them before end of shift for the day/night and they checked, diagnosed bacteria and gave me antibiotics. I received two bills. Guess which bill was higher? Yes, the former. For no service, and false advertisement. I wrote them a letter complaining and telling them I would write to the newspapers and local politicians and they in return apologized and rescinded the request for payment. Point is, they can be held accountable, but obviously with legal insurance that is so much easier for you. But this work is shoddy. Do not do this procedure with these people even if you do decide to go for general anaesthesia, though I advise to find someone else, explain what happened (before do find out what exact anaesthetic they gave you and how much).
Oh no it’s not like this, they were actually sorry and I only had to pay for the material and the meds they gave me. The guy actually recommended me to do it abroad when he told me the price for doing it in CH under complete sleep… I don’t think it was a shady business on their side, I ve been visiting this doc for some times and they were always pro, they even called a surgeon from the cabinet to do the injection in case they missed something but even him could not manage, that’s when they told me the easiest way would be with a complete anesthesia.
an extraction is more expensive in CH than in DE or FR but with local anesthesia it should cost i would say between 100, 200 CHF but will depend of the location, from my part 2 injections needed and CSS with the complementary insurance not dental, they took 50%. under general anesthesia no idea but i remind someone said around 1000CHF per hour.
at the border just be careful sometimes it’s dental clinic just to make money with swiss and sometimes add extra costs for something not really needed, but in your case it’s clear defined they will not ask start anyrthing else that the extraction
I traveled to Milan to extract a non-wisdom tooth 3 weeks ago at Dens Italia Gioia. Didn’t cost me anything since I got the same tooth treated several years ago in the same clinic and the subsequent treatment and extraction fell under their dental warranty.
I booked an extraction of a problematic wisdom tooth with the same clinic in couple of months, that’s the earliest appointment I could get because they require a surgeon being present on-call during the procedure and all their surgeons are fully booked for the next couple of months. They gave me a quote of 195 EUR per wisdom tooth with anesthesia included, in Lausanne I got a quote of 400-500 CHF per tooth. Note that it’s recommended to extract wisdom teeth in pairs - lower and upper one, to prevent the complication of compensatory eruption. So, be prepared to have two extractions, they can be done at the same time.
They also gave me a quote to put an implant in place of the extracted tooth, which came around 2300 EUR for a total cost that includes everything (diagnostics, surgery for bone augmentation and sinus lift, abutment, crown). In Switzerland I got a quote of around 7000 CHF for everything.
I lived in Belgium for some time, and was surprised by how cheap the dentists are over there (much cheaper than in Italy, for reference). I know that may not be so convenient to travel till there, but just saying
Thanks for sharing. Not sure where you asked in lausanne but i find that the costs are very at the top for switzerland, I paid 160chf for wisdom extraction and for implant saw cost at 4000 to 5000 CHF.
The issue is that even when a clinic publishes prices for a treatment, the price doesn’t include all the auxiliary cost that come on top of the extraction You need to take into account the total cost that you end up paying, not just the cost of the extraction. And the cost also depends on individual situation, e.g. if one is older (it’s easier to extract wisdom teeth for people in their 20s since the roots are less established) or there is some other complicating factor, the total cost will be higher. Here is the breakdown of the costs that I got for a tooth extraction:
Taxe de base pour la désinfection de la place de travail, 22,36 CHF
Anesthésie par infiltration, 71,16
Extraction avec séparation radiculaire, 326,40
Contrôle de la plaie, 63,41
So the extraction would be 326, but the total cost would be ~ 500CHF. I went to several clinics in Lausanne, they all have more or less the same costs. See for example Ardentis Dental and Orthodontic Clinics | Prices.
for implant saw cost at 4000 to 5000 CHF.
It’s the cost of abutment and crown. Again you need to take into account all the costs to make a comparison, that would include things like initial diagnostics, CAT scans and bone graft and/or sinus lift surgeries (they can run up to 3000CHF depending on individual situation, see e.g. ▷ Dental implants costs | Dentist Team Lucerne), that can make the total cost between 5000 and 10000 CHF.
I’d recommend going to France to get it done by professionals at a fair price with minimum hassle.
A few years ago I got 3 wisdom teeth removed under general anaesthesia for approx 1300 euros.
The dentist (a stomatologist surgeon) from the Centre de Chirurgie du Visage in Annecy organized everything. It was done in 2 visits to Annecy, second one being at the Clinique d’Argonay for d-day with someone driving me back home for safe-measure after my nap.
PS: Complementary insurance in Switzerland for dentistry is simply not worth it for adults, too expensive for very little coverage. Also of note, I was sadly not able to deduct the expense for my taxes, as it wasn’t eligible under LAMal or LCA .
