We need to judge the president’s choices with the information available at the time the choice was taken, not with the hindsight of the future. The Iranians only bombed some US military outpost somewhere and that was it, but you will agree that it could have been worse?
If he should go to jail, the justice department will decide, but for sure they won’t use arguments like “look at what the other presidents did”…
You also wrote “Just watch Biden, we will have another conflict in 2021”, can you elaborate on that? Any insider information? Should I short the sp500?
I encourage you to read the history of empires and broaden your horizons beyond the last few american presidents. The world was never run by Sunday school teachers preaching peace and service to humanity. The wars don’t end, they just keep moving, though reducing in size and casualties, and partners switching sides ever so often. one fun fact about what you said about Islamic terrorism: al qaeda / taliban and US were on same side when fighting soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s. US actually funded and armed them or co-created them in first place. So did the cold/hot war in Afghanistan against occupation by USSR created islamic terrorism for future?
So credit to Iran(?) than to Trump for not ‘starting’ a war!
The picture you shared can be useful for children’s card games to compare scores. But not useful for who ‘started’ wars and who created Islamic terrorism.
On the other hand, did Trump make you and me richer as shareholders by reducing corporate taxes: YES, YES, YES (I think!) So yes, you liking him more than the previous presidents makes perfect sense for that reason.
And what did Saddam, Gaddafi and Iran have in common? They wanted to trade oil in EUR instead of USD. It’s not gonna end well if you want to mess with USD/oil
So twitter permanently suspended (and in turn made past tweets unviewable) Trumps account.
Afaik he was in violation with their rules for quite a long time, and they only kept him on because he was president.
I’m not sure if their rules are ok. I personally tend to lean to the “free speech as long as you don’t incite violence” side.
What worries me a bit is that Parler (a twitter alternative popular by conservatives) is being forced to change their rules by Google and Apple to stay in their app store. https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-threatens-to-ban-parler-from-app-store-11610148297
Sure, they are private companies but they have a quasi Oligopoly on speech over apps. Google use incitement of violence as the reason why they demand parler to change. Apple is a bit more vague.
However, I generally don’t think it’s a good idea if stuff like “Hate Speech” or “offensive material” could be censored by Apple and Google. They should not be the ones to choose what is acceptable speech and what not.
It’s hard to defend the decisions of big tech as fair and consistent. Trump has been banned, but some dictators and Chinese propaganda accounts are still free to operate. I think this might have been a shot in the foot. Politicians now see clearly that you need to play nice with FB, Google, Twitter, or you will be banned. So they will want to limit this power if they get the chance.
I don’t know a thing about Parler but this is exactly why I find centralized distribution of Apps by Apple and Google, through their stores, such a bad thing. I should be able to run an Android/Apple device without a Google/Apple account (and I can but there are an incredible amounts of hoops to go through).
I’ll welcome the return of the days where at least governements and big corporations choose to distribute their own apps instead of doing it exclusively through proprietary “Stores”.
I’ve watched a few more videos and I’m just amazed by the depths to which the attack on the Capitol went, some of the people there were actually there to kidnap and/or hang congressmen/women/senators and/or Mike Pence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhjRXO72v1s
I am also amazed by the strong condemnation and reaction against those acts that I can see and the strong will to get to the bottom of it, which is what tells me that the U.S. government isn’t done yet and that U.S. bonds and stocks should still hold good value in the future. Which, I think, is also what the market is seeing and why we’re green even though there’s still potentially more of this coming.
I think the basic issue against Trump is that you all discuss on different layers. I usually talk about the basic layer where you judge people by the basic rules of law. I can say bad things about Obama, for example since he got a Nobel peace prize for not doing anything, but that can be discussed for years since he might have started a process by just being there at the right moment.
What is instead easier to discuss is the basic stuff that Trump did. Stuff that you can verify by just reading what he did. Everyone can read his posts and see how he lied or said something wrong. How he backpedaled etc etc. He could have been a good disruptor but instead remained greedy.
Anyway what should be analyzed now is how his party react/reacted.
Not quite what I have been feeling lately, to be honest. My doubts about the US have been increasing and my concerns about investing half of my capital in one country seem more and more validated.
I think it exposed the US not only as a flawed democracy but also a society that’s more (politically) divided than ever. Also, maybe more than surprised about the storm on the capitol itself, I am shocked about the rhetoric prevalent on social media and among many of their politicians that seem unable to grasp or accept that a democratic vote has taken place.
Plainly speaking, the whole country seems full of nutters.
That doesn’t necessarily mean it will have repercussions for big business. Big corporations and the business environment may still prove to be resilient and not need to depend on a democracy. It still worryies me in a way.
Agree that it is most likely bad. But seems to follow a similar course than then last 8 (or so) year of US foreign intervention in that area. Or am I missing something?
I’ve raised a point in this thread that Trump has mostly been about reducing US military involvement abroad, which can be debated, I didn’t do full research on this. And I said that once Biden is elected, I suspect the war machine will be back on.
Meme makers could not miss the opportunity to bring it up.
To me it seems like such a no-brainer that monopoly in military power is as bad as in business. It’s my dream to see US, China and Russia split into smaller parts, but that will probably remain in the realm of fantasy.
It would be fun to watch California become an independent state and see how they perform. The US would also become more red as a result. I don’t get why everything has to be so centralized. Let’s promote diversity of governance
On a philosophical note, this would promote what Nassim Taleb calls antifragility. But I suspect that this also goes against human nature; people like to control things, or at least to have the illusion of being able to control things.
I think the power lies in the smaller states who can either refuse to do business with the big bully or continue, either due to corruption or threat or profit. You can benefit from siding with the bully but the whole World is worse off. I guess this falls under Prisoner’s paradox.
