I wanted to share a recent find that might be interesting for the travelers here. It’s the Ether.fi Cash card.
The main reason I’m posting is the perks on the free tier (“Core”). I’ve confirmed it actually includes 10 lounge visits per year (via Priority Pass, with 5 guest passes) and car rental insurance. Usually, you only see this on paid cards.
I got a virtual card (Apple/Google Pay ready) and the registration took me about 30 minutes.
If you want to use it for more than just for the benefits, it will help if you’re a bit crypto-savvy. There’s a 2-3% cahsback, but the card USD-denominated and there is a 1% FX fee.
DYOR, but being free, it doesn’t look like a lot of risk to just get it for the benefits.
Well, I spend some.30+ minutes to open the Core card and funded it with 2 euros, but it only gives a paid access to lounges with prices like 50+ USD for Geneva. It actually says so on Ether website. So not worth it IMHO
Hmm, I take it back. You are right. On Ether website they only mention Visa companion/Dragon pass. (With pay per use ). But I have created a PP account with my card details and it says that I have 10+5 visits left, just as you said. Have you already tried to enter to one of the PP lounges with this app/card? My slight concern is that since this is not an official benefit, at some point PP may charge Ether and Ether will pass it to me. But I guess I shouldn’t worry too.much about it with 2 euros on.my account
Great find anyway. I hope to test it soon and will report back. CDW insurance with Visa Signature may be a nice bonus (I currently have an annual car rental excess insurance for about 100 chf) if it works, but you need to.pay with the Ether card, so some FX losses inevitably, and usually car rentals does not like virtual cards if you pay on the spot. But my biggest concern is that I am not sure this benefit of.Visa Signature is valid for Swiss residents and I do not want to find it out “the hard way”. I guess we need to find some Swiss-issued.Visa Signature card that list CDW insurance as a benefit.
I’ve been using this card as my daily driver for a couple of months now also while traveling internationally. Never had any issues. The cashback is really nice as you’ll offset the 1% FX fee that way. Haven’t tested the lounge access yet.
They are also starting to issue physical cards, I’ve received mine this week.
I noticed that they effectively canceled FX charges for Euro spending. There is 0.02% commission for loading Euro to your account (i.e.one cent for 5 euros). But they give you 3% Cashback up to 800 Euros in spending per month , 1% up to 2000, so not too bad. I added it to my Google pay and plan to use more actively for cross-border shopping. The lounge trick seems to be dead for new customers, but it worked for me and I still have a few remaining visits on my PP account. Also I am tempted to get their physical card to use it for car rental insurance. Normally, they charge 40 USD for physical card, but if your have enough turnover to move up to their next level, they will refund this charge. Also, interesting referral bonuses, so feel free to reach out to anyone on this thread who already has this card
It is in the same league as Revolut, Wise etc. BIN checker list it as debit. They have some complicated (for me, I am not into crypto) scheme when you use your crypto assets as collateral and the card acts a credit card. Not my cup of tea, but it may work for others. I would not trust them with my.life savings, but I do not mind wiring them my rough estimate of my monthly euro expenses once a month for some 25 euro per month cashback. Let’s see how long it will last.
