Childcare costs

You can’t miss something you never experienced I guess

Correct. And I still don’t miss it. But maybe that’s just a character thing?

Don’t generalize based on how it is for you. Maybe some people have really shitty or boring jobs and they have a talent for taking care of kids? After all, we have been doing it successfully for generations

I heard that the medical group I work for charge 400.- CHF for it. Only. The doctor might add an extra on it, and probably extra visit can add to the price. I think 1k is a big max. I know it’s around 400€ total in France as well. I will keep you up to date when I know the final price.

I might have employee discount as well (still have to figures how to ask HR ladies how this work without the situation becoming awkward^^).

Exactly our thinking. I said “if a second child happen, it’s nice for him. If not, it’s nice for us!”

You deserve a status, man! And I wish you from all my heart that you kid will understand what it mean as a sacrifice and will be eternally grateful to you for that (if they are not yet).

This post made my day, thanks @Zurtan

I was stated a flat 900 CHF fee for the procedure and the check-ups. Can also report back when I have the exact number.

To reduce cost, do we want to start a thread and tuto on the DIY section?
Just kidding…

You’re warm welcome sir!

Well, for me having a big family is what I enjoy and what challenges me, so it’s really a lifestyle choice. It does make financial independence a little more challenging, but challenging yourself and doing the things you want to do is kind of the idea behind FIRE.

How about a group discount or affiliate scheme? xD

My best advice to reduce costs, for kids or adults: SECOND-HAND!

Kt ZH has 250CHF kinderzulage, zero familienzulage, no subventioned kita after 100k family income… :flushed:

Do you mean offsetting using child+family benefits and tax break? Which Kanton do you live in?

250? I get 200!!!

True, 200 francs until age 12, then 250.-

Dear all, interesting and timely topic! We are expecting our third child for June  we both wanted three, but for some time we rationalized it away. Then when the window was closing (didn’t want to have more than 3 years difference with the second) we just said fuck it and did it anyway

I work 100%, but need to be in the office only between 9:30 to 16:30, given that I do my 8.5 hour during the day, before or after.

My wife works 50% at a school so she has fixed hours, but at least get the same vacation days as our kids. This reduces costs for childcare during summer and other holidays.
We live far away (5 hours) from grandparents, so they may come for an emergency, but cannot be reliably there every week (not their job anyhow - hate to see the stress on all those retired people managing 7 grandchildren, some parents really profit shamelessly)

We have a combination of school, after school, childcare and Tagesmutter/maman du jour

I have to say that where we live (kanton Fribourg) is actually not that bad. If both parents earn less than 100k, one entire Kita day cost 40 chf (we are above so we pay maximum of 95 chf per day):
http://listeattente.crechesfribourg.ch/files/fr/Tarifs.pdf
if you are interested. But you need to get into one of the subsided creche, because not all of them are recognized as such.

The oldest kid is in the school and while the first two harmos years (4 and 5 years old) are complex because school is only part time, the after-school and lunch system is well organized and incredibly cheap, like 40 chf with lunch to keep her during lunchtime and in the evening until 18:15. We fortunately need to do it only once.

In total with this confuguration (150% of working hours, 2 days of kita, one day tagesmutter, after-school system) we come up to around 1600 chf per month. My wife makes 3.8k netto at 50%, so that’s still a win, and if you consider accident insurance + pension +AHV is even more.

Now with the third I may actually plan to have one sabbatical year in the future…we will see  My employer doesn’t allow it, but we will see

Other costs are for sure:

  • larger car (we swtiched from my beloved kia ceed sw to an used prius+, total around 14k to change car)
  • may mean larger flat (not for us - kids are going to share a room for a looong time  we live in a 3 bedroom flat)
  • health insurance, but not so big

Benefit:

  • we go out waaaay less eating in restaurant …I think we went from twice a month 120 chf dinner for two to maybe once every three month before corona. so from 720 every three month to 120
  • familienzulagen, we three kids all in all we are going to get 1000 chf per month

More and more I want to consider moving to Fribourg. Such price differences from Zürich it’s like another country. Kita subvention limit here is 100k family income so basically no chance with two earners. Kita 30k full time per kid. :open_mouth: flats extremely expensive…

Too bad that our jobs are here…

You could also add:

  • 8000 CHF (minimum) of additional deductions from taxable income for the 3rd kid, which brings the total deductions to at least 22k CHF

that is unfortunately not so true - since I’m not married, with 3 kids I can only deduct 1.5 kids (I have the highest salary). My concubine (?) works only 50%, so she get to deduct 1.5 kids as well, but she doesn’t earn enough to really fully benefit of the deduction. Not like I would. But even 0.5 kid is a welcome addition
