So I’m not sure if you are aware but there are these websites that focus on finding cheap flight deals, error fares and the like. Some are free and others there are some subscriptions to get all deals.
The way it works is that you select the airports you are interested in departing from and maybe also the regions you are looking to fly to. Then you get some emails whenever they find flights for much lower prices than normal
Most are US centered as expected, some are EU but I haven’t found one works for Swiss airports. I have been subbed to that one (free tier) and there are some crazy ridiculous deals but since they aren’t from Swiss airports or anything closeby it defeats the purpose a little bit.
I was discussing with some friends today about this and I was sent https://www.secretflying.com/ which I will investigate, but maybe there’s something better out there.
Since I haven’t found a thread for this, what have you mustachians got?
Life-hack used (and found) recently by my colleague: if you want to fly with Swiss from Zurich, try to check the same route, but with AirTrain option from Geneva. He was able to save >100CHF per person on his flights, by doing this. And of course nobody will check if you actually took the train from Geneva - it’s different that not taking the 1st leg of flight .
Anyone ever had success with VPNs (pretending to order from a different country)? I’ve tried this many times but so far I could never save more than 1-2% (and this usually because of currency and not location)…
All those VPN companies regularly make ads about this ‘trick’ which doesnt seem to work from/to CH.
Personally my hack is to use ITA Matrix, and select the discounted fare classes directly (with advanced routing and F BC=F for e.g. discounted first class fare on swiss, etc.). There’s also a lot of option you can specify on matrix (e.g. do a 2 day layover somewhere so you can visit places on your way while it’s still the same ticket).
You do need to know a bit how airline pricing works tho, and sometimes you have to go through a travel agent to get your ticket since the airline website won’t allow you (but any travel agent can usually recreate the fare from the routing codes shown in matrix).
(I’ve done quite a few non-usually bookable flights this way, e.g. flying from ZRH to the US with BA + Virgin Atlantic, with a 2 day layover in London¸mixed class flights with Premium eco + first, etc.)
This is also possible with Google Flights but it’s not quite the same thing as you need some luck on the timing.
What I’m looking for/What those sites I linked provide is that they email you with deals/cheap fares that are temporarily available to a given destination. Sometimes these only last a few hours/days, before they are “back to normal”. It’s not even promos by certain airlines, it’s just some fares being super cheap at certain periods for whatever reason (sometimes also error fares).
Ofc if one is looking for destination suggestions for a given time, it’s a decent idea. I do that as well.
