Changing house insurance

Hi there,

I currently have a house + personal liability insurance with Smile Direct. I’ve been with them for many years (at the time it was the cheapest) but the price keeps rising and according to comparis.ch I could save some money by switching to some other insurance company. Also my situation is changing since I’ll own a house starting in summer 2026.

Some questions to help me figure out what to do:

  • Have you also experienced 5-10% yearly premium increase as well? (282 CHF in 2020, 429 CHF for 2026 for exactly the same coverage…)
  • Any other insurance company you’d recommend? (comparis says Elvia, and Simpego would be among the cheapest)
  • Is there typically a cancellation period like for health insurance?
  • Can I cancel the insurance in the middle of the year when I move in to the new house?
  • The house comes with a “Haushalt- und Gebäudeversicherung” from the previous owner. Is that overlapping with the current insurance I have (just with things specific to owners) or is it independent?

Thanks in advance

Have got really good rates out of Axa. Just make sure you always get the quotes online.

Cancellation details would be listed in your contract terms (see e.g. their web portal).

Insurances aren’t specific to the house but the owner, so what the previous owner had will likely not translate 1:1 to you.
