Braces / Invisalign when adult

Hello,

I know someone who was able to get dental insurance and get orthodontic treatments at 40 years old.

I’m only a few years younger and I was wondering if anyone has been in that situation ?

Which insurance did you choose ? How much did it cost ? What treatment did you get and how much did it cost + how much was at your charge ?

Thank you

I don’t have any direct experience but I would check on moneyland.ch or comparis as they have some info on dental insurances.

I find that it’s not always completely accurate (but still a good reference to start with). Therefore you’d still need to contact the insurer to find out their exact conditions

I highly doubt any insurance will pay for correcting misalignments of your teeth that were already present when you start the insurance.

Isn’t it like with any other supplementary health insurance, that they exclude anything that is problematic at the start of the insurance period?

Probably you’ll save more money by comparing different dentists/orthodontists (get actual offers) than trying to get ‘free’ money from a insurance you’re not yet part of. The offers vary widely (for the same treatment) as you can also see in this Comparis article.

If you do it, consider going abroad (and getting packs for couple of episodes at the same visit).

I looked at this in Spain and in Switzerland and the difference in price was marginal - if anything it was more in Spain over the long term because you would have to go back and get new alignments and checkups etc. What clearly costs less, is if you have to have any wisdom teeth out. This will obviously cost less abroad. This is often a requirement if you want to push your teeth back, but again, this depends on how bad your teeth are.

I think, in general, this treatment comes in around 5k both in CHF and in €

I went and had my wisdom teeth out and it cost me 1000 CHF :grimacing:

Sorry for my ignorance, but 5k doesn’t sound so bad to me.

I guess it depends on the work you have to do.
It is usually a treatment that could last 2-4 years.
My dentist more or less told me to save for 10-15k chf by child in Geneva.
Any feedback from parents that have been through this journey ?

Ah, I assumed that this was the total.

15k sounds like really tricky case or a very expensive dentist…

If you check this comparison, the complex cases were all <10k (of course it can always be even more complex), and some even offer it for <5k. This is for the full treatment.

It’s not rare to pay twice the price if you stick with the first dentist that gives an offer.
