Big Law as an asset class

Maybe this would be interesting for some of you.
I didn’t realise before watching this video that most law firms never taking external money. All the money in law business is owned by lawyers….

A new asset class might be emerging

Law firms don’t generally take external money because they don’t need to. Like most professions their business isn’t asset heavy.

What’s more, guild like regulations tend to mandate that only practicing attorneys can own shares in a law firm. At least that’s the case here in CH.

Yes, this is what Bloomberg video says. But they also said space might be opening for Private Equity in US.

That’s just private equity specialized in a specific sector of the economy. I personally wouldn’t bet that I, as a small individual investor, can outsmart Big Law with regards to profiting more from their profits than they would be able to by keeping their equity and not selling it to me.

In my assessment, the odds are that them + the intermediaries collecting fees are getting the better part of that deal vs me.

In Switzerland, all shares of a law firm must be owned by enlisted lawyers. Federal case law

It’s also the law in US today. It appears only UK has some sort of equity from external parties
