Just got my fireing letter today. I’ve been pondering launching my own venture for some time and think I am ready for it. The business world is, however, full of tall grass and it is dangerous to go alone so I’m putting it out there just in case:
Profile: background in risk mangement (natural hazards) / environmental engineering / civil infrastructures / land management. Side of mountain leading. Would pivot toward finances/insurances (by trying to leverage the risk management aspects).
Location: Valais/Wallis, would relocate for the right opportunity.
Languages: fluent in French, fairly proficient in English, low B level in German (need to practice but I’ll have time for it. Count 6 months for getting up to a level suitable for business relationships).
Business ideas:
civil/environmental/land management private practice ;
“life” coaching (survivalism through life in nature, financial skills, fitness, art to say no and not give a f*uck, networking → building confidence in order to shine in life).
mountain leading (also with various potential themed tours, like Switzerland or Earth history.
house flipping venture.
open to other ideas in several fields so get them coming.
Feel free to drop me a PM if you’d like to explore possibilities (independent business venture isn’t a hard requirement, I’m open to working in a business under the right circumstances). I’ll gladly travel to meet you and have a chat around a coffee/beer.
Sorry to hear of the firing, but I hope it leads onto better things!
You have a laundry list of ideas there, when you have time to digest, maybe think about what you really want to do and also what you might be successful at to narrow down the direction you should go in.
Oh sorry for this! I wish you all the best! You seem like a resilient, intelligent and kind person so off to better things I hope!
Just an idea because you mentioned mountain tours and I thought about this the other day - there’s a person organising tours around the lake of Luzern somewhere with raving reviews. It’s organized individual day tours where he basically books a lot of stuff for the people, typically a train ride, boat or ride, a hike with him and a typical meal. I thought that that would be a neat thing to do around here too and people really seem to love it and be ready to pay top prices for it too. I think for them it’s a whole day but for him only a couple of hours (the time of the hike), so I guess you could even organise two out three of them on the same day if you shuffel the timings around. Could basically be anything from a transitory job to a side hustle to a full time job.
I feel like times like these are good opportunities to broaden my view with a lighter spirit so I’m trying to get a feel for what opportunities are out there, knowing that I do enjoy engineering, risk management and finance.
An update on this: I’m giving private practices one more try. The conditions are good and allow for me to put a focus on being ready to switch to freelancing if disappointment is on the menu once again.
The job market for environmental/civil engineers seems to still be pretty hot.
Have fun and enjoy your life!
