This already happened with the same company. At the time, I bought it for $12 and it then ran up to $1,000+. So, yeah. It can be interesting
SMCI was already investigated for fraud in past too?
I did not know.
For the facts, I think the de-listing is to happen around mid of November if nothing is being undertaken and the press conference of SMCI regarding this debacle is tomorrow, on election day, what a perfect timing
Regarding the expansion yes mostly AI driven it expanded like crazy if you compare the revenue of the last 2 years it doubled. Didn’t check HP or DELL but I doubt their revenue doubled like that, but yeah maybe HP or DELL have more “true” numbers in their books…
Sure, if you’re a contrarian More seriously there is probably a 50/50 chance that things get sorted out, get a new auditor company, pay a big fine, and things are back to the daily business. Like so many companies who manipulate their books. Of course there is always and end of story possible like Enron…
I see. Normally when i see such companies, i would never invest in them. But seems I do not have the guts of being real trader
You don’t/shouldn’t put much money in these kind of cases so I don’t put much anyway and it’s part of my fun portfolio money. On top of that I always wanted to own a piece of SMCI but in 2024 it just went to overblown prices, now it’s at least back to 2023 price, which is still quite high IMHO.
Cool. All the best
Another stock with accounting problems:
I bought today
Same same.
SMCI still falling. I think it has gone beyond accounting now. These issues are now affecting operations and it looks bad for SMCI. Down a further 25% today.
I’d wait not just for de-listing now, but talks of bankruptcy before thinking of getting in. I’ll take notice if it gets to the $2-$5 range. Currently $22.
I’m waiting for some good PR news and as soon as I see a green candle will buy some more. So basically awaiting some confirmation that winds are turning…
Yesterday evening, I make a list of trades to execute and just now, I get a bit of free time from work and start churning through them.
First, I go through the ones that I will sell… All done good.
And now onto the ones to buy…
Are you f–king kidding me?! Up 15% on the day I try to buy it?!
I didn’t want to do another LEU and so bought anyway.
Ziff Davis.
Wait, what?!
An ancient hard disk in my stem brain that most of the newer brain cells believed to be just a relic kept for nostalgia starts to beep and re-activates, slowly spinning up its spindles, flickering a green LED, and painstakenly slowly reads those memories back into the newer brain cell RAM area …
I never really knew ZD as a company but Ziff Davis is a term / buzzword stored in the dusty spider web corners of my brain’s memory from 20 or 30 years ago …?
Wikipedia teaches me they were founded close to a hundred years ago!
An early (June 1928) issue of Popular Aviation ; the first magazine published by Ziff Davis. Artwork by Stewart Rouse.
And they still exist today – even more amazing!!
…
Sorry, didn’t mean to take away from your purchase today, but your mentioning the company name just sent me down a trip on memory lane.
Good luck with your bid!
Yes, nostaligia was among the reasons for buying!
Future plc is another one - happy memories of PC Plus! subscription as a kid.
Another “life hack” from my past. Looking for accommodation to go skiing for a week, there were only uninspiring apartments to be had, as it was already October. We went instead and bought a holiday home for 220k without much knowledge of the place. Turned out to be a reasonably good investment as it provided a permanent weekend getaway 2 hours from home. In spite of a very light due diligence.
BTW, if you’re interested in a brief FASTgraphs discussion of Ziff Davies from just a couple of days ago by Mr. Valuation himself, tune into his latest YouTube video starting at 22:09: https://youtu.be/QMRx4dTcPJ4?si=wn3i0lrc6eQfvcbv&t=1329
Thanks, he flags 2 other holdings I have: VZ and Comcast.
I do have doubt about whether AI is a threat to companies such as ZD and also whether Comcast (at least the cable part) is obsolete. Though I tend to think of it like tobacco - maybe it will die out, but it might take a long while to do so.
Really sorry to inform you that you are in bad company with these two.
(I have slightly overful positions in both of them)
In today’s episode of Phil Moves Markets.
Late Friday last week, I sell BMY (a position held since 2019).
