I work in a different canton to the one where I live which means I incur travelling and accommodation expenses when I visit the office. Mainly train tickets and hotel expenses. Am I able to deduct some or all of this from my taxes?
Transportation for sure, hotel I am not sure. I guess you have to convince the tax office that you really need to stay in a hotel instead of renting a secondary residence.
Hello, I am in the same situation as you. The difference is that I rent a room in the city where I work (two nights per week).
Public transportation
It is possible to deduct public transportation costs (season ticket or tickets; for the latter, depending on the amount, you may have to provide proof. There is a federal maximum of CHF 3â200. At the cantonal level, it depends on each canton. Where I live, I can deduct the full cost of my 2nd class GA travelcard).
Accommodation
It is possible to deduct the cost of a rented room. I have not found any prices for this, but I assume it depends on the rental price in the city where you work. I am not sure if this is possible for hotels, but if the price does not exceed the price of a rented room, it should be OK. It is best to ask a tax assessor from your cantonâs tax authority.
There maybe cantonal amount ceilings to what is deductible.
More importantly, deductions may be refused if the tax authorities determine that you keep your primary residence where it is merely as a âlifestyle choiceâ - especially if you work 100% in the other canton and/or donât have close family ties in your home city.
