Exactly.
For me, RE (alone) is not really “safe” (risk spread wise at least - e.g. if you own a single unit it’s the opposite of diversification), nor necessarily “good returns” (of course with the benefit of hindsight it is, but it could just as well not be going forward).
Though all we have is history to model from. 
And entire life is one big bunch of risks, and management thereof.
