Afaik that is the real IRL scenario.

They come to F-CH and ask for more, much more, than in D-CH, don’t they?

I’m pretty happy about the quality of life and service offered… I don’t think that’s a very wise topic to start.

That was for the _fun_ part I guess. Tax declaration are fun, so is paying these taxes, in our little chocolate paradise.

However. There are nearby countries where 55% household won’t pay any taxes, real tax haven, _for sure_! And real baguette, speaking quality of life!

Let us complain about paying taxes!

If anyone else happens to be running into interface glitches while declaring Canadian stocks in ZRH Private Tax:

Dividend returns aren’t automatically displayed (in my view) and despite clicking the ruler “Erträge” (which is already checked) off and back on, you cannot enter any returns.

Solution: click “Zugänge/Abgänge” on and off (even if you don’t have any) and the dividends magically appear in the interface.

Question: Is the 0.75% Ausgleichszins taxable? 🙂
And what is the period for which this interest is applied? Till September 30? (~9 months)
I haven’t decided if it make sense to pay the whole provisional tax at once now or by end of September.
The benefit (VS savings account) in absolute terms is relatively small anyway…

I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out at some point. I think my conclusion is that it might be, but I doubt anyone declares it (and I doubt they care).

Depends on cantons. ZH due date is 30th of Sept (so all the money there is in credited with interest before that, after that it’s the balance remaining after accounting for final tax bill).

My gut feeling tells me that this makes it a good candidate for “_depends on canton_”.

EDIT: Of course:

_“Der positive Ausgleichszins wird nicht als Einkommen besteuert.”_
([Lucerne](https://steuerbuch.lu.ch/band2a/bezug/verzinsung), whereas negative interest is, counterintuitively, deductible)

_“Ausgleichszinsen zu Gunsten des Steuerpflichtigen sind steuerbare Erträge aus Guthaben.”_

I personally think this is a very important and often overlooked point, which basically cuts your tax interest in half, so it becomes less interesting to pay taxes in advance.

I also got some (fractional) referral shares. If I understood correctly, they are starting to vest after 1 year, so 2025 would be the first year for me to declare some of them I assume.

Would you happen to know how to declare them, is there a special category for this? Is there any way to simplify things that is still accepted (Canton Zurich)?

Somehow starting to regret I entered a referral code when opening an IBKR account 😅 . Now have these fractional shares vesting at different points in time. Between me and my wife (IBKR+Degiro), the “Wertschriftenverzeichnis” is already becoming a pain to fill out with quite a few positions.

Given the limited investments I have for now in IBKR, my time tracking and entering all this stuff once per year might offset any fees I saved, hehe.

Is it like 200 bucks? Not sure it’s worth anyone’s time thinking too hard about it.

> I personally think this is a very important and often overlooked point, which basically cuts your tax interest in half, so it becomes less interesting to pay taxes in advance.

but after that point you also start paying for interest on the the amount of the final tax bill you haven’t provisionally paid yet. So though part of it moves from “early payment gets interest credit” to “late payment incurs interest), the net “money delta” from postponing another month stays the same.\*

\*: until the final bill, when interest rates start to ramp up.

Correct, I didn’t think of that. In that sense, the interest actually continues after September until the final bill.

I am not sure I get this. Could someone clarify with an example?
Assuming the provisional tax is 50K and you pay it end of Feb 2026. The deadline is end of Sept 2026. The final bill is 60K and get a notice e.g. on June 2027 to pay the difference (10K).
What is the interest you get?

</div>

In ZH you’d get, 7/12 \* interest rate \* 50k (for the time until the bill is due), minus 9/12 \* interest rate \* 10k for amount you owe since the bill was due.

</div>

That’s correct. The interest rate may change from year to year, in which case the interest for the 10k will be the combination of a 2026 part (3 months at the 2026 interest rate) and a 2027 part (6 months at the 2027 interest rate).

And if you want to avoid paying interest, check the provisional tax calculation of the tax software when you submit your tax declaration and pay the difference before the due date. It’s possible that the final tax bill will differ, of course, but with a correctly filled out tax declaration, it will typically match the provisional calculation.

Why isn’t there a roll-eyes 🙄 emoji to react with?

_"Verzugszinsen werden als abzugsfähige Schuldzinsen behandelt;_
_Vergütungszinsen hingegen in der Praxis nicht als Einkommen erfasst."_

[Old info](https://kanton.baselland.ch/finanz-und-kirchendirektion/steuerverwaltung-steuerbuch/band-3/bezug-abschreibung-und-erlass-von-steuern/downloads-1/band3-135-03.pdf/@@download/file/band3_135_03.pdf), so take it for what it’s worth.
But I guess such things don’t change often, do they?
