But solar is basically only running 20% of the time, so it’s a bit of a limited solution and a dangerous delusion to think solar (or renewables in general) can reliably provide electricity.

20% if you are lucky! Close to where I live they renovated some buildings and added vertical photovoltaic panels even if the building is facing West and is partially covered by a hill. I computed the capacity factor: a laughable 4%.

I prefer not to think that the project was for sure partially paid by my (our) taxes.

We need to stop thinking that renewables + batteries will alone solve the energy problem, and stop investing in green-washing projects.
