MacBook Air 13" (M4) vs MacBook Pro 14" (M5) — which makes more sense?

I think there are 2 elements:

  1. What you need and what is useful. I think modest specs are enough and maybe you want something light for travel
  2. Toy and future-proofing aspect. Let’s admit it, it is fun to have new stuff and spending extra for a hobby is also OK. Plus you don’t want to buy again if you end up needing something more powerful.

The only thing that speaks against #2 is the extra weight when commuting.

This moth********* Surface is always empty and when I truly need it, Windows 11 wants to do an update, of course.

I‘m so done with this piece of crap :open_mouth:

Please don’t make your buying decision based on the alternative being a Surface.

@Cortana - if you can wait a bit more…maybe it will be worth :man_shrugging: : Why You Shouldn't Buy the Next MacBook Pro - MacRumors

It feels like there are articles like this every year. The content is always the same: “Don’t buy it, because the next one will be better.” But that’s logical. The next one will rarely be worse.

The ultimate mustachian laptop at any given timepoint is always the one that you cannot buy yet.

I still think that 99% of the stuff we do (or Cortana ) are doable with a phone cpu/gpu.
Google Lapdock or NexDock. Those are my choices if I have to go back to commuting on trains. This is more true if you have a NAS at home where you should have all your data and sometimes apps (remote desktop).
Apple doesn’t like that much so maybe on iPhone it’s not such a smooth ride..

I mean one valid reason to buy a Macbook Pro would be that it might last me for an entire decade? So in the end actually saving me money?

You know the itch for a new toy will arrive much earlier than that, don’t you ? :grimacing:

Is it because of the specs or the ruggedness of the computer itself? The specs of the Air should also last you 10 years for light work.

Most smartphones (mines?) become obsolete because they get no more OS updates and apps become unavailable on them. Otherwise, they would also last 10 years with potentially a battery change.

@Cortana, did you buy already?
There are new models:

Apple gear has very good resale values, so cost of ownership can end up quite low when you factor in resale value at the end.

The new MacBook Neo looks like a very mustachian option. Find someone who works in education und you get the base model for CHF 479.

It’s a good deal for the price, but the 8GB RAM (max) give me the shivers by just thinking about it.

Yeah I wouldn’t buy one either, but my partner only uses Safari, Mail, Teams and Word, for her it would be perfect.

Most people wouldn’t notice if they suddenly had more than 8 GB.
