Interactive Brokers for dummies

Bluntly put, you’re probably doing it wrong, together with many of us.
Lots of reasons for discrepancy, cash position, etc.
This explains quite well without being too long IMO.

I’m still confused about the pricing.
I opened my account this month (so first three months are free?). I bought VT (twice, once 10k, once 20k) and commisions were 7.21. This was not on the tiered, but on the fixed price model. How much would it have cost me in the tiered model? What about when I move out of the three free months?

The fees on tiered are generally lower. For example the last 4 times I bought VXUS (approximately 13k each time) the commissions were: 0.58, 1.20, 0.36, 0.84.

From IB website:

In your case you would have paid 2.79 USD of additional fees at the end of the month.

So I got away cheaper now (or am I confused)? Plus no monthly fee for first three months. Well those three months don‘t matter much in the end :joy:. I plan on buying for about 3k/month + some lump some when it becomes available (three months notice period for bank account). So I should reach 100k by the end of the year and then it‘s from apart from commission and TER?

I’ve had my base currency set to USD for the past year or so.
Now I wanted to check the annual (2020) performance report in CHF.
So I tried to do it by changing the base currency into CHF, and generating the wanted annual report.
However the report still holds everything in USD (not CHF as I would have wanted/expected it to do).

Does everyone’s reporting behave the same (i.e. not updated according to current base currency)?

Check their FAQ. It‘s all in there.

Good evening!

I am the kind of boring investor who pumps everything into Irish ESG ETFs, like SASU. It’s time for me to open an IBKR account, as I wish to spread my assets a bit more - and I feel more confident now they have EU-regulated entities.

I am pretty sure I saw a new topic here yesterday, of a gentleman requesting a referral, in order to get $1 worth of IBKR stock for each $100 in net deposits. The topic seems to be deleted now, so I’m wondering if there is some sort of moderation policy on this matter?

Alternatively, I’m wondering if I could ask IBKR itself to invite me to open a brokerage account and "participate in the Program (“Referred Account”) ?

Thanks!

This program makes no sense for current users of IBKR as it only benefits the new user…

I’ve sent you my link via private message. The usual policy of the forum though is that no referrals are allowed. This was introduced because the VIAC refferal link spam got out of control…

Personally I think that a thread where people can ask for a code to be send via PM would be fine.

IBKR doesn’t give you referal codes like VIAC, so it’s not an issue, but I understand that forum rules prohibit such exchanges.

If anyone is serious about opening an IBKR account (meaning depositing at least 100’000$), you can private message me and I can give you a link to receive 1000$ in IBKR shares.

I finally took the plunge and invested my first 7k in IB! A few newb questions.
I have left over cash from buying shares, 11CHF and 86USD or something like that. Should I just leave that in IB until I send more money to buy more shares? Is there no easy way to convert all my CHF to USD? Is there any point in buying fractional shares? I think somehow my account doesn’t let me do that.

I’d keep some money on the side for the upcoming fees

I have similar amounts in cash. As @anonym suggested, the fees will have to be paid somehow, so you probably want some leftover cash.

oh yeah good point, in which currency do you pay fees? The base currency of the account?

Yes in the base currency of the account.

Another silly question but I read all kind of info about converting CHF to USD, like doing a sell order on CHF.USD or something but I just clicked on the CHF in the portal and it offered to convert currency. Is that not the same thing in the end?

On the portal it’s easy-peasy like u say.
But it’s the same.
In “old” times / pre-Portal-times, in TWS, it was more “complicated”/less intuitive. Ignore those old comments.

On the client portal, the “currency conversion” tab is next to the “currency” tab and it does the same thing but hides the complexity. It will execute a market order.

Note regarding fees : On my CHF base currency account, buying USD using CHF will generate a CHF fee, but buying a stock with USD (VT for example) will generate USD fee.
