IMHO CBDC is evil. Having KYC-free money (and for me Bitcoin) it’s a necessity not a burden.
Not only with CBDC, but with usual bank accounts, you’ll wake up one day to see it frozen, because you wrote something on social media, somebody didn’t like.

But as long as you play along…

Btw the nice thing about offline digital Euro is that you’re not totally stuck if there’s eg a blackout.

The goal is to be able to hold 72h of regular expense in the offline wallet.

i think bitcoin will still be around to be bought using Digital Euro to serve the needs of anonymous payments / KYC free medium of exchange.

It could be that some people would prefer that all money is stored in KYC free medium. But I don’t think it’s actually needed

government job is to provide options -: CBDC, crypto, physical notes, bank accounts etc. and people do what they want.

agree… that would be the job. Just, I don’t trust them to do only that. They want full control. So no thanks.

Btw it’s not meant to be a store of value but a payment system.

Governments should provide minimal regulations and stay the hell out of unfocused, centralized, surveillance schemes and remove barriers for free enterprise in crypto. Some EU Government take months to provide a simple ID card to people living abroad making them go through dozens of hoops and they want to do digital money? Hilarious

I think do too. The main point of digital Euro is payment system. But for whatever reason there is always a fuss about anything govt do in Europe. 🙂

Yes precisely. Having the payment system intertwined with banking is a massive risk incase of banking collapse, it can lead to collapses in society.

Separating the payment system from banking builds resilience in the system, and means people can pay for things if banks do collapse through taking on too much risk.

One of the reasons for bank bailouts was to maintain the payment system, not to save banks.

I have always been worried about the scenario that robbers snatch and overpower me, and force my face and eyes open over the phone to enable faceID unlocking, then proceed to steal all my accounts. ChatGPT says it’s much harder than it sounds, and it’s been “trained” to not work in situations where there’s coercion and physical violence.

The other good thing is that such a theft should be very reversable by a bank, something not possible with crypto. So all in all I don’t like that we have all our money effectively on the phone, but stomach it for convenience.

Regarding cash, I somehow like cash, still, what I didn’t and don’t like is having to plan to drive to a cashpoint to withdraw it, but that said I too haven’t used cash since at least covid-19, possibly even before.

I think you trust banks way too much. I had several first hands experience of banks failing to take accountability for errors they caused or offer even basic assistance. You may think that deposit there are “yours”, but it’s controlled by a bureaucracy and layers of IT systems without clear accountability. I’d rather be protected from institutionalized incompetence than hypothetical criminals. Money in tradfi it’s definitely not as yours as decentralized crypto.

Given you say “tradfi” I don’t think we’ll find middle ground anywhere. So far I haven’t ever been let down by a bank, be it English, Greek, Swiss, by personal experience, or French, Italian, Belgian, Dutch or German by others’ experiences.

How is bitcoin kyc free? I understand that using crypto seriously in your financial transactions you will need FIAT on- and off-ramps which require KYC and for larger sums even PoW. Tracking bitcoin transactions between wallets and tracing it back to your KYC on/off ramp wallet is no rocket science (e.g for tax audits. Unless you use mixers, monero or similar to obscure your traces.
Or the bitcoin comes from obscure sources in the first place.

For digital payments we already have normal banking/TWINT etc. For offline, we have cash. Is there really enough demand within the space between these two?

</div>

Given that this is an Euro project I think the problem is that TWINT equivalents are not really defacto standardized like Visa/Mastercard are, especially every country seems to have a different market leader if any. And you wouldn’t make bank payments in a shop, but IMO cash is way bothersome to go back to it.

edit: also IIRC TWINT was fairly expensive for merchants?

Tracking crypto transactions should be trivial if banksters were actually capable to do their job. It’s not my role as a client to educate them for free about the bare basics of crypto, airdrops etc.

Beside that, they can’t even handle their own archaic tradfi products without messing up and being held accountable. Hopefully, they will be gone soon.

Twint only works in Switzerland and I believe digital Euro payment system will work across the Eurozone.

India and China have already eliminated the duopoly of Visa and Mastercard. Eurozone being large market is still dominated by US players. This shouldn’t be an issue in normal world but with everything getting weaponised these days, hooking the regional payments with foreign companies is not very good idea. Payment systems in EU are currently fragmented with every country doing their own thing.

For Switzerland I believe Twint is enough as it’s widely used for CHF transactions.

Also Switzerland can probably afford having dependencies on Visa/MC, EU is a much bigger fish.

(in any case for now the SNB has been clear they don’t want to pursue retail digital cash/payment, the focus is only on wholesale CDBC/commercial settlement)
