being dead might also impact on the ability to utilize wifi
I am a network engineer and it is hard to read this thread for me.
- I don’t know any provider who would give you a second modem which yo can plug into a phone socket
- Network over power lines aka Powerline can may or may not provide good results and you only find out too late (when you have already spent your money)
- A wireless repeater has no network cables, picks up the wifi and re-broadcasts it. You would want to buy a system like Deco or another device that can be put into repeater mode to make sure your client device roams seemlessly and clients connected to the modem/main access point and those connected to the repeater can see each other. You can only install a repeater in the area where your current coverage is ok-ish because every packet needs to be sent to the main access point/modem over the air. If the connection between those to is unstable you will end up with wifi but no internet. If you have been to Asia and Africa knou know what I mean. Deco system will help you to set this up.
- Access Point is the device that has a network cable and provides wifi to an area without the need for coverage by it’s neighbor. Most providers will sell you these.
Beware of people selling you a ‘stronger’ Access Pont or repeater. Power is regulated and all vendors are maxing out the powers permitted. Differences in strength are very limited between brands these days
What are mustacian options for checking radon levels. I see some detectors available at retail but they cost around $200.
Every repeater that I have seen has a LAN port where you can plug in a cable and it acts in AP mode…
Wouldn’t trust people to have followed the rules (based on what I heard it’s actually pretty common, sometimes even for a Kita…)
I got curious, so I looked for an indication of radon risk for my area. Found the following map:
I think I’ll be fine but it could be interesting for other people.
So I’m in the 2-10% zone whatever that means.
The case I heard about was I think in Zurich with levels about 5x the legal limit (so probably about 10x the limit used in the US which is more conservative wrt radon)
This is true. OTOH not every AP can be set into Repeater Mode.
Found this via Google. It seems some cantons will offer measures for free.
I live in an upstairs floor apartment, so no practical experience.
