Banking + credit card combinations [24-26 edition]

Did you check the June account statement:

I received that “From August 1, 2026, UBS me will become UBS Banking. With UBS Banking, your everyday banking transactions can be managed easily and flexibly. Your current accounts and cards will be automatically transferred to UBS Banking, and no action is required on your part.”

Will have a look

I think the points depend on type of account (gold, classic , free) rather than type of card (Debit, credit, prepaid)

How did you earn these points? As mentioned by @nabalzbhf if it‘s though credit card spending, you‘d better collect those benefits from a free credit card, unless your credit card spending is really high?

Through credit card spending. It might not be cheaper overall than the cumulus credit card (one of the very few without international surcharge) but if my main card had a high currency exchange markup (or worse, also an international surcharge), I’d probably end up using multiple cards to optimize things all the time. And it’s annoying having to choose the right card depending on what you’re doing (and with Revolut/Wise I’d have to make sure to have enough money on that account for big purchases). With key4 I have a very simple setup with reasonable net fees with my usage.

The only thing that is not reasonable with key4 credit cards is cash withdrawal but that’s pretty much the case for all normal credit cards. And cash withdrawal is very rare for me.

I checked last two statements , there is zero fees.

I personally think UBS Free account works great. I have never had an issue with UBS.

According to the Poor Swiss, Migros Cumulus has an overall surcharge of at least 2% on foreign transactions. It’s always more expensive to use a credit card if you compare them with the cheaper debits cards (Wir, Wise, Revolut).

Yes, that would be the trade off.

That’s fair.

The cumulus credit card still has an unfavorable exchange rate markup, yes (otherwise, it would be clearly better than key4 credit cards). However, they don’t have an additional surcharge for international use, which most Swiss credit cards have.

E.g., if I remember correctly, the standard UBS credit cards have a 1.7% exchange rate markup in addition to a 1.75% international surcharge. The latter is applied even for CHF payments processed internationally. So a total of 3.45% for foreign currency transactions. That’s the case for most credit cards here, although UBS (non-key4) is particularly bad in how high the international surcharge is.

Sometime back I concluded that the best setup is not a one stop shop, it’s actually three in a box

  1. free bank account at reasonable bank (UBS, ZKB etc)
  2. Free Credit card like Cembra Certo one for CHF payments
  3. Revolut / wise / Alpian for foreign exchange related payments depending on how much FX is needed on regular basis

3. you forgot WIR?

as mentioned by @jess93 I personally make this two in a box thanks to Wir.

Have no personal experience with WIR. But it seems they can do a good job based on some comments

I am very happy with them.

They use to have that weird fee on outgoing payments, is it gone now?

Me and my wife have both our personal and our joint account at Bank WIR.

We really like the account - the app is a bit odd, but in general it does all we want and it’s free… They are a Genossenschaft, so I hope they’ll keep their offer free in the long run as well.
