Are you FI or FIRE? (March 2026)

There are more people FIREd on here that you may know then.

Why do you think that someone who has achieved financial independence and retired early is better at managing their portfolio than someone who hasn’t? Even the worst portfolio performance can be offset by luck or an extremely high income, for example (as one of the individuals mentioned did).

Why do you think Roger Federer who has won 20 Grand Slam single titles is better than me at tennis? :stuck_out_tongue:

Not sure where I said that.

Bad example imo.

I can win the lottery and retire early. Doesn’t mean I am good at managing money.

Or being a google manager at 500K slary for 20 years, having 5mil on the bank and retire early. I could have it all in GME and probably do fine.

It says exactly nothing if someone is retired early, unless we exactly know what they are doing and if they are doing it well.

True, but it might have been worded harsher than how I wanted it to be. In Roger Federers sense it would have meant that while he is the greatest of all time, he still got beaten. I one of his speeches he also mentioned that even having a great win/loss track record throughout his career, he only won slightly more than 50% of the overall points.

If you say so.

I’m aware of @Wolverine, @finalcountdown, @oslasho, @JEPG, @weirded @Ilpiccone, @Butch and @Lislot who are all still acive (not sure about @Butch, though). I like reading their posts.

There must be others I’m forgetting, in advance apologies.

Only the still active ones will reply, so we have that filter as well.
Poll will expire end of April 2026.

Add a “No” option please!

I’d rather not dox anyone or myself on a highly ranked (in Google) public forum, but each their own I guess.

Turns out you don’t have to answer the poll. Or answer for anyone else.

You did not even have to reply.

Far from FI myself.

Oh wow, I was totally wrong, sorry.

Your posts are always so balanced and full of wisdom that I just assumed you have been in FIRE nirvana since years.

Bad work environments purgatory can temper your soul like nobody’s business too.

I’m on team “you can’t make my life any worse so I’ll be doing what I want anyway” though the amount of coordination meetings where I’m told the same things back and again that tend to actually make things a bit worse are tending to become more and more frequent, much to my chagrin.

I am probably FIish but not at level of some.

With spouse partner (damn Freudian slip :joy:) we are certainly comfortably FI. DINK but also we have distinct setups, not married, been so for 2 decades.

We’re not RE and haven’t managed our cash flow to live from our investments yet, still saving. Early 40s.

As long as I am not 100% zen by watching daily my NW go by 1 new VW Golf up (or lately most of the time down), it’s not FI. I’m 75%ish…
(but hey! let me save some Rappen on FX fees on my 1€ coffee in Italy)
I like it that way and probably will never RE. Doing what I love to do and go every other day to Italy for a coffee…

I can say that I am nearly RE without the FI :joy: so I did vote no.

You lack a „Coast FI“ option in a sense that you no longer NEED to save/invest more but just a few years of sufficient income to cover living expense, so that investments can compound to the final FI number.

from a behavior and mindset point of view, thats a milestone that can change the picture quite a bit already.

Apology to @Wachwitz and @DRPF – I missed you in the list.

I guess it’s fair to expect some credentials if you pay for a service. If I pay 1k for a single tennis lesson, the coach better has some excellent track record and credentials.

But complaining on a free forum that people without or other credentials (no way to know this anyway, most are anonymous) are too loud, is strange to me.

It’s like joining an alcoholics self-help group and then complain why only 10% of them are sober for more than a year. :man_shrugging:

He already added the ‘no’ option :stuck_out_tongue:
